The Third Book in a Four-Part Series of Books on the Armies of Imperial China is Reviewed

This book is actually the third of a four-part series of books on the Armies of Imperial China. This book covers the period of time from 590 C.E. (Common Era) until 1260 C.E. in Chinese History. Thus, this book deals with the armies of the Imperial Chinese government during the Sui (589 C.E. through 618 C.E.), Tang (618 C.E. until 907 C.E.), Liao (947 C.E. through 1125 C.E. and Sung (960 C.E. through 1260) Dynasties of China. China during this time was suffering through a series of civil wars. The Sui Dynasty reunified China in 581 C.E. However, even as the dynasties listed above followed one after another, the entire period of time was punctuated by brief periods of chaos and civil war. There was a period of time from 907 C.E. until 959 C.E. which is known as the period of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms. This was the period of time between the downfall of the Tang Dynasty and the reunification of China under the Sung dynasty.

This book is very good reference for a reader while the reader is reading other books on Chinese history of the period from 590 C.E. until 1260 C.E. Like most other books published by Osprey Publishing Company, this book has a chronology of events of the period of time and has maps of China during the time under discussion.

Imperial Chinese Armies Volume 2

Firstly, I would ask the reader to pay no heed to the previous review that only gave this title two stars. This text is highly informative, readably covering the armies of Imperial China from Yang Chien's reunification of China to Kubilai Khan's final campaign against the Sung. The history of the Army is broken down by dynasty; each section examining the history, leaders, and weaponry of the dynastic armies. Military science (including siegecraft and artillery), military thought, and nine important battles are lastly dealt with. The battles section is particularly useful, as the author used specific campaigns to illustrate his points throughout the book.

Like Christa Hook (one of my favorite Osprey artists), Michael Perry's artwork is often bashed on Amazon reviews. I never saw any of his work until I bought this book, but was not remotely disappointed. Though he may be no Angus McBride (but then again, who is?), his artwork is colorful and detailed; his individual subjects have realistic facial expressions, and the armor and clothing details are excellent. Plate 'F', showing a brave northern Sung light swordsman clashing with a cavalryman, is my favorite.

In short, this is another good title by Osprey Publishing on the armies of ancient/medieval China, and is a great source textually and visually for the historian or wargamer.

Informative and Enjoyable

Imperial Chinese Armies 2 covers a significant time period in the history of warfare. It was during this time frame that gunpowder was invented and the Mongols became an empire. Beginning with the short-lived but important Sui dynasty the author then moves through the T'ang and Song periods. Also discussed are smaller but never-the-less important dynasties such as the Hsia in Northwest China which boasted a formidable military before being swept away during two Mongol invasions. For someone who is not an expert in Chinese (and I am certainly not) Osprey has provided readers with a concise but highly informative volume dealing with land and naval forces/warfare in medieval China. The book is enhanced by maps, colored artwork illustrating warriors from various dynaties, and a section near the end briefly highlighting individual important battles such as An Lu Shan's victory over the T'ang at the Tung Pass.

Comprehensive and Understandable

This book is an excellent introduction to the historical, cultural, social, economic, and political backgrounds of the times before, during, and after the beginnings of Christianity, i.e., from 330 B.C. to A.D. 330, from Alexander the Great to Constantine. It superbly complements the study of the New Testament. It has helped me attempt to make concepts in the Gospels concrete which, at first, seemed to be abstact.

Aboslutely the best

This is THE book on NT backgrounds. Ferguson gives you a broad sweep of nearely everything you need to know when studying hte NT and an extensive bibliography of additional resources for picking up the rest. I read this book early on in my carreer and still refer to it almost weekly. In the more specialized material I now study, his work is the basis that allows me to understand it. In short, if you read nothing else on NT backgrounds, read this. If your going to enter into advanced study of NT backgrounds, read this first. I even reccomend this book to 'lay' churchmembers without any theological training. It is simply the best.

The next best thing to Fergusson is C. K. Barrett, "NT Background: Selected Documents." This is a collection of excerpts from 1st Century primary sources. Still, READ FERGUSON FIRST!

Surpasses its goal of being an introductory textbook

Ferguson's intent in writing Backgrounds of Early Christianity was neither to produce a history of the ancient world nor to synthesize ancient culture, philosophy, and religion in accordance with some interpretive scheme.

Instead, his desire was to craft an introductory textbook as a guide for beginning students. In the preface, he notes that limitations of writing and analysis have forced a compartmentalization (e.g., philosophy versus politics) and viewpoint (e.g., politics, religion, marriage) within his book that did not exist in the ancient world.

Ferguson ensures relevance to the New Testament with frequent references. General bibliographies for broader research are included at the beginning of each chapter. Specialized bibliographies for investigation into more narrow issues are provided at the end of each chapter. All bibliographic references are to works in English except where special circumstances apply. Footnotes are ample and well-chosen. Numerous photographs and tables enliven and clarify content.

In the preface, Ferguson deals with the issue of parallels between Christianity and ancient beliefs and practices. He denies that such similarities demand a naturalistic explanation for the rise of Christianity. This writer agrees and would go further to say that early apologists like Justin Martyr took a similar stance. Moreover, the popular Christian impulse to claim an utterly unique origin for Christianity is a self-inflicted handicap in dealing with the historical evidence. Furthermore, if Christianity were totally unique, it would likely be incomprehensible.

Backgrounds is divided into six sections: (1) Political History, (2) Society and Culture, (3) Hellenistic-Roman Religions, (4) Hellenistic-Roman Philosophies, (5) Judaism, and (6) Christianity in the Ancient World. The longest section is on Judaism, the most immediate background for ancient Christianity.

The first section, entitled Political History, begins with a discussion of the Near East before the time of Alexander the Great followed by a description of Alexander's exploits, the breakup of his kingdom, the politics of the republic and of the empire, and the relevance of it all to the New Testament.

The second section, entitled Society and Culture, covers the Roman military, Roman social classes, slavery, Roman citizenship, social relations, social morality, economic life, clothing and appearance, entertainment, education, literature and language, art and architecture, and finally, clubs and associations.

The third section, entitled Hellenistic-Roman Religions, addresses ancient Greek and Roman religions, religion in Hellenistic-Roman times, domestic and rural religion, civic cults, ruler cults, personal religion, Greek mysteries, Eastern religions, Gnosticism and associated topics, and the later development of monotheism and sun worship.

The fourth section, entitled Hellenistic-Roman Philosophies, provides information on the religious, ethical, popular, personal, and social aspects of philosophy followed by treatments of the Sophists and Socrates, Plato and the Academy, Aristotle and the Peripatetics, Skepticism, Cynicism, Stoicism, Epicureanism, Eclecticism, Neopythagoreanism, Middle Platonism, Plotinus, and Neoplatonism

The fifth section, entitled Judaism, covers Jewish history from 538 BC. to AD 200, Jews in the early Roman Empire, Jewish literature and other sources in the Hellenistic and Roman periods, parties and sects, beliefs and practices, and lastly, organizations and institutions.

The sixth section, entitled Christianity in the Ancient World, includes material on literary references to Christianity in non-Christian sources, archaeological remains bearing on early Christian history, some alleged archaeological remains of early Christianity, attitudes of pagans toward Christians, the legal status of Christianity, hindrances to the acceptance of Christianity, religious rivals, factors favorable to Christianity, and the uniqueness of Christianity.

Backgrounds is so well-done that one struggles to find much in the way of needed improvements. One observation, however, is that it tends to focus more on backgrounds of the New Testament rather than early Christianity as the title claims. An example is in section four where Ferguson provides background on Roman and Greek philosophies. Tying that background to first century apologists (many of whom styled themselves as philosophers in order to gain a hearing and avoid persecution) would have been helpful. Another example is where Ferguson highlights the Roman preoccupation with law but fails to connect that "background" with the resultant legal flavor of Western Christianity. A third example would be failure to explore the actor's mask [page 100] as background to Tertullian's use of the mask ("personae") to explain the nature of the Trinity.

Continuing in the area of law, more detail on the use of oaths as a way of settling legal disputes would have been helpful. In Roman law, a person could attempt a summary judgment in his favor by resorting to an oath as a way of establishing his case. Thereupon, the judge could either accept or reject the oath as sufficient. That appears to be the background for Heb 6:13-18 where the author rests his point on such a strategy. In the case of Hebrews though, God swears by Himself, not some other god. Thus "the two immutable things in which it is impossible for God to lie" appear to be God's dual roles as (1) an unchanging advocate (the one who swears) and (2) an unchanging judge (the one who passes judgment on the trustworthiness of that which is sworn). None of this would be apparent without more background into ancient legal practices.

Although Ferguson generally focuses on New Testament backgrounds rather than backgrounds for early Christianity, he sometimes misses an important clarification to the New Testament itself. Take, for example, his discussion of the First Jewish Revolt [p. 420]. Although he does distinguish Barabbas as a revolutionary, he fails to use that distinction to challenge the popular present-day understanding of Barabbas as a common thief. The difference is profound. The fact that Barabbas was a Jewish version of Robin Hood or Zorro makes the people's preference for him over Jesus more understandable.

Another improvement would be expanded treatment of ancient homosexuality. Ancient practices are often used to argue for modern-day acceptance, so fuller treatment of the subject would be a welcome addition.

Continuing on to the topic of slavery, Ferguson's background on manumission omits the point that freed slaves were granted citizenship. That fact could open up greater insight on Acts 22:28 where the chief captain says he acquired his citizenship with "a great sum of money." One possibility, in light of background studies, is that the captain was a former slave who had bought his way to freedom.

Moving on to Artemis of the Ephesians, Ferguson gives several interpretations for the bulb-like appendages adorning the idol [pages 175 and 198]. His options include eggs, breasts, or even the shape of a meteor. He does not mention, however, the possibility of the bulbs being the testicles of sacrificial bulls, a viewpoint that is gaining more and more acceptance.

On the subject of eagles, Ferguson refers to them in four places [pages 51, 91, 210, and 214], but fails to elaborate on how they served as omens within Roman culture -- a belief that probably traces back to contacts with the Etruscans. Such knowledge could throw light on Jesus' use of eagles as an omen for the impending destruction of Jerusalem -- "wherever the corpse is, there the eagles will gather."

On the subject of emperor worship [e.g., page 203], it would have been helpful if Ferguson had tied the Greek antecedents of Roman emperor worship to 1 Cor. 12:3, where Paul says, "No man can say 'Jesus is Lord' except by the Holy Spirit." In ancient times, the competing claim was "Caesar is Lord," and no person would have been bold enough to resist that assertion without divine help.

The section on Greek and Roman religions would have benefited by exploring the episode in the Gospel of John where the soldier pierces the side of Jesus with a spear and out flows "blood and water." The background for that episode lies in Gnostic beliefs and religious mythology. Specifically, the phrase "blood and water" appears to be a hendiadys that collapses into "watery blood" -- or in other words, "ichor" -- the blood of the gods. Thus the point of the story is not to inspire later-day autopsies so common in New Testament commentaries, but rather to say (1) Jesus was truly dead and (2) Jesus was truly God -- both ideas being anti-Gnostic assertions made plain by the mythological meaning of "ichor."

As a final suggestion, the reference to shared bathing among men and women [page 105] should include the possibility that common facilities may have been time-shared to avoid mixing of the sexes -- at least in some locations.

All of the preceding suggestions are quibbles in the face of the overwhelming wealth of material Dr. Ferguson expertly offers. Detailing the good points would mean rewriting the book. A few examples will therefore have to suffice. Explanation of the typical "pedagogue" as a slave who harshly "mastered" his charges [page 110] is rich imagery for Paul's slave-master understanding of the Law in Gal. 3:23-25. Furthermore, Ferguson's background on veils [page 171] is indispensable in understanding 1 Cor. 11 where Paul apparently goes against custom to make a gender distinction that had not existed previously. Moving on to pages 287-296, Ferguson provides an excellent debunking of the popular, but apparently unfounded charge that Christianity borrowed from or developed out of Mithraism. Finally, the exposure of a child as the Roman way of refusing to admit the unfortunate victim into society offers a powerful commentary on the present-day practice of abortion. Examples like the preceding are too numerous to mention.

Before closing though, there is one problem on a grammatical level that deserves special attention. The final editing of the book has omitted commas as the means for setting off introductory phrases. As a result, the reader will often have to read affected sentences two or three times before sorting out the missing punctuation. The net effect is to seriously detract from an otherwise enjoyable reading experience.

Notwithstanding the rather surprising grammatical shortcoming, Backgrounds of Early Christianity fulfills its purpose admirably, surpassing its goal of being an introductory textbook and earning itself a prime spot on the bookshelves of pastors, teachers, and researchers.

Eye opening!

This is a well-written guide to driving under the influence law. It really opened my eyes to some of the deficiencies in our police and criminal justice system. Redlich shows that field sobriety tests are unsound, to put it nicely (even sober people will fail them). Many other parts of the system are designed to produce convictions rather than to assess guilt or innocence fairly.

This is an easy, fast read. The writing is clear and I think every driver should read it. You might be very glad you did, someday!

Drunk Driving System Gets Smashed

If you're looking for a tepid book, this isn't for you. Longtime DUI lawyer Warren Redlich provides a no holds barred view of the drunk driving justice system. Agree or disagree with him, the book must be part of the DUI discussion and will open the eyes of many who read it.

A Guide to Cops - The TV Show and in Real Life

In this quick-reading book, experienced DUI defense attorney Warren Redlich steps the reader step-by-step through the process a DUI defendant (culpable or otherwise) will experience. Reading the book is like watching "Cops," but from a less worshipful perspective.

You have the right to remain silent: Exercise that right, Redlich exhorts the reader! Cops will regularly claim one's speech is slurred so there's no advantage to talking when stopped.

Redlich shows that field sobriety tests are junk science. Sober people routinely fail them. He perceptively notes that field sobriety test standards haven't changed even though blood alcohol thresholds have dropped in recent years. The field tests suddenly went from differentiating above versus below 0.1% to differentiating above versus below 0.08% blood alcohol levels? One should refuse to take a field sobriety test.

Redlich is a DUI defense attorney but he notes that his myopic professional incentive is to encourage yet-more stringent DUI rules. More money for DUI defense attorneys! But he instead has the intellectual honesty to describe a system run amok combining angry, perhaps grieving, neo-Prohibitionist MADD members; cops incentivized to make successful arrests; prosecutors who want to win cases; and judges in fear of being labeled soft on crime. (Redlich emphatically encourages clients who go to trial to seek jury, not bench, trials.)

Perhaps the only way to (almost) surely stay out of this monster's maw is to not drink and drive. Indeed, Redlich suggests that, for some people, it may be more feasible to eliminate driving in conjunction with drinking rather than to eliminate drinking.

Redlich argues that good defense attorneys force cops to do their jobs better. He has surely improved the quality of policing in New York and Florida where he practices and, hopefully by dint of this book, more broadly.

About the Author

Adam Zagelbaum, PhD, is an associate professor at Sonoma State University in the department of counseling’s pupil and personnel services track, where he also serves as PPS program coordinator. About the Author
Martyn Hooper founded the Pernicious Anaemia Society after being forced to give up full time work as a lecturer in Further Education owing to the long term effects of undiagnosed pernicious anaemia and vitamin B12 deficiency. He now runs the Society full time, and campaigns for improvements in diagnosis and treatment of these conditions.

A patient-friendly guide to understanding pernicious anaemia

Pernicious anaemia (British spelling; PA) refers to reduced blood cells when the intestines cannot properly absorb vitamin B12 (due to a lack of intrinsic factor in gastric secretions). Since earlier studies showed that PA could be treated with vitamin B12, it is possible that this discovery, along with the availability of standard blood tests, may have led to the assumption that PA had been conquered (hence the reference to "The Forgotten Disease"). The author uses his own experience and those of others to illustrate that under- and misdiagnosis of this autoimmune disease are common occurrences. While many patients are only mildly inconvenienced by downstream symptoms such as excessive fatigue, other sufferers can experience life-changing neurological, hematological, and other consequences. Ultimately, the reader is taken on a refreshingly, jargon-free journey from the author's own diagnosis to joining forces with others in an attempt to understand the disease etiology, vitamin B12 sources, problems with diagnosis (using case studies), and treatment gaps. This book is an extremely helpful resource.

If you suffer from Pernicious Anemia/Vitamin B12 Deficiency then I highly recommend this book. It delves into the rollercoaster of misdiagnosis and unnecessary tests we often have to endure in order to get diagnosed and treated. It also explaines the differences in treatment, such as sublingual vitamins and self injection. Very Good Book!!

The need for early detection

As a researcher in pernicious anemia and vitamin B12 deficiency for over 30 years, I encourage others to read this book. Written from the heart, Mr. Hooper describes his personal experience with walking difficulties and mental symptoms and delays in diagnosis until finally pernicious anemia is discovered but too late to prevent full recovery with treatment. This story is common for pernicious anemia patients. There is a milder form of subclinical vitamin B12 (affecting millions in the USA) which can be just as deadly over time, leading to Alzheimer Disease and other neurological disability. The book contains valuable information such as a listing of common symptoms reported by members of the Pernicious Anemia Society. This work will benefit the public and medical professionals in encouraging early diagnosis and treatment of vitamin B12 deficiency thereby preventing permanent neurological disability. Eric J. For some reason I don't usually like femdom books. Maybe because I find it hard to associate with the character. Not being much of a Domme myself. Most authors seem to make the character so large and in charge that you forget that they are a soft feminine woman underneath the Domme. Not so with Ann Mayburn's femdom books. I loved the dynamic between Emma and Ryan. The immediate connection was fierce and sexy. The love and devotion that Ryan has for Emma even after all these years, was beautiful and touching. Ryan makes her forget that she is the Domme, even just for a little bit. He cherishes her, will do anything for her, if she would just give him the chance. This novella is the first in a three novella series, so while First Kiss does end with a Happy for Now, the story continues in the next book, Second Touch, and the third book, Third Chance, which has an expected publication date of February 27th, 2014. A fourth book is very possible, I'll just have to wait and see what Emma and Ryan want me to do. ;)

Scorching Fast Paced Read!

I’ve done it! I have finally popped my Ann Mayburn cherry! I’ve seen posts about Ann and her books all over Facebook and now I finally get the chance to rave about her myself! First Kiss is book 1 in Ann’s new FemDom series, Emma’s Arabian Nights. First Kiss was a short, sexy, fast-paced romance. Don’t let the short part scare you, because even though it was a quick read for me, it was full of erotic awesomeness! I don’t read a lot of FemDom romances, because there is nothing better than a gorgeous, possessive, demanding Dom. But if Ms. Mayburn keeps creating her male submissives like Ryan, I will not have any trouble reading more FemDom in the future.

Emma is a Pro-Domme who doesn’t normally take house calls for submissives. Her boss and her best friend, Moira, who is a character that I loved by the way, talked her in to speaking with the loaded mysterious male. Something about the man pulled Emma in and she agrees to meet him for one session to see how it goes.

“I want to care for you the way you deserve. I want to worship you and make you happy. I think you’re perfect and I want to treat you the way you deserve.”

That’s all it took. Those three sentences jogged Emma’s memory and rocked her world. Those three sentences brought back memories of regret and the best kiss she has ever had. When Emma finds out the truth, does she have the strength to stay away, or will another kiss pull her back in?

I need to know more about this wonderful journey of Emma Simonov and Ryan Darwish.

Hot D*mn!!! This book was so hot, it was almost explosive. If you want to take a dip into Femdom than Ann Mayburn is your woman! She writes the most amazing Dommes and Emma was no different.

Emma is a pro-Domme who is working her behind off trying to support her parents and herself. I really liked her because she seemed to really care about her clients. She was a very good Mistress. I liked how she dealt with Ryan because he wasn’t always the best at behaving. Lol

Ryan is a sweetheart!! (Be careful ladies or he will steal your heart) He has been in love with Emma since high school. I loved how he worshipped Emma and got his happiness from making her happy. He could have came off a bit stalkerish but Ann wrote him so well that all he was just very devoted. Plus he was extremely sexy when he submitted to Emma.

I can’t wait for the next book! I think I may have actually yelled “NO!!” when this one ended. This was a wonderful beginning to Emma and Ryan’s relationship. I love second chance love stories so that made it twice as good.

A fun hot read!

BDSM is all the rage now since that book was released. Women are swooning at the powerful handsome Doms that our favorite authors are giving us. We all want to feel treasured and owned like the beautiful submissive women in the stories. Even the "vanilla" are tantalized by these stories. Now vanilla isn't bad at all but the fascination with BDSM is that it comes in many flavors and different toppings. So when you see that handsome, powerful and drool worthy man he just might be the one on his knees worshiping a strong, confident, beautiful woman.

First Kiss, is the first book in Ann Mayburn's series Emma's Arabian Nights.

Emma is a pro Domme at Kiss of Blue where she works for her best friend Moira. When Moira calls Emma in early for a meeting and the promise of coffee and croissants from her favorite bakery she knows something is up. We all have a friend like Moira. You know that friend who not only can make any crazy idea sound like the adventure of a life time but get you to join her in it. She has an offer for Emma. So even though Emma keeps having deja vu moments making her feel like she is missing something, she agrees to meet him in the dungeon at Kiss of Blue.

Who needs the Myth Busters when we have Ann Mayburn to dispel the myths of Dommes being cold, heartless women and the male submissive being weak. She has given us a confident woman with a sense of humor who knows what she wants, likes and enjoys taking it. As well as a strong successful man who has the desire to not only please a woman but also submit to her desires. Your going to love the byplay between Emma and Moira. You might even have a wish for a little deja vu of your own when you find out Ryan's secret.
