About the Author

Frederic S. Mishkin

Frederic S. Mishkin is the Alfred Lerner Professor of Banking and Financial Institutions at the Graduate School of Business, Columbia University. He is also a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, co-director of the U.S. Monetary Policy Forum, a member of the Squam Lake Working Group on Financial Reform, and past president of the Eastern Economics Association. Since receiving his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1976, he has taught at the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, Princeton University, and Columbia. He has also received an honorary professorship from the People’s (Renmin) University of China. From 1994 to 1997, he was Executive Vice President and Director of Research at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and an associate economist of the Federal Open Market Committee of the Federal Reserve System. From September 2006 to August 2008, he was a member (governor) of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.

 

Professor Mishkin’s research focuses on monetary policy and its impact on financial markets and the aggregate economy. He is the author of more than twenty books including Macroeconomics: Policy and Practice, Second Edition  (Pearson, 2015); Financial Markets and Institutions, Eighth Edition (Pearson, 2015); Monetary Policy Strategy, (MIT Press, 2007); The Next Great Globalization: How Disadvantaged Nations Can Harness Their Financial Systems to Get Rich (Princeton University Press, 2006); Inflation Targeting: Lessons from the International Experience (Princeton University Press, 1999); Money, Interest Rates, and Inflation (Edward Elgar, 1993); and A Rational Expectations Approach to Macroeconometrics: Testing Policy Ineffectiveness and Efficient Markets Models (University of Chicago Press, 1983). In addition, he has published more than 200 articles in such journals as American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, Econometrica, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Journal of Finance, and Journal of Monetary Economics.

 

Professor Mishkin has served on the editorial board of American Economic Review and has been an associate editor at Journal of Business and Economic Statistics, the Journal of Applied Econometrics, Journal of Economic Perspectives, Journal of International Money and Finance, and Journal of Money, Credit and Banking; he also served as the editor of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s Economic Policy Review. He is currently an associate editor (member of the editorial board) at five academic journals, including International Finance; Finance India; Review of Development Finance, Borsa Economic Review and Emerging Markets, Finance and Trade. He has been a consultant to the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund, as well as to many central banks throughout the world. He was also a member of the International Advisory Board to the Financial Supervisory Service of South Korea and an advisor to the Institute for Monetary and Economic Research at the Bank of Korea. Professor Mishkin was a Senior Fellow at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s Center for Banking Research and was an academic consultant to and serves on the Economic Advisory Panel of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

Good Book, still has some errors.

This is a good textbook that really helped me gain a good understanding of monetary policy. It covers current topics such as inflation targeting, the Taylor principle, sterilized currency intervention and the zero lower bound. The book also covered supply and demand for investments and what factors cause supply and demand to increase and decrease.

I feel like I have a good grasp of what is going on currently inside the Fed. Bernanke is using inflation targeting and Mishkin is a proponent of the tactic. It also covered quantitative easing and the time preference theory of bond investment. I think I have a good grasp of the topic. Several chapters have appendices that are available for free online. Reading through those was an extra bonus when it came to test time.

The book did have a couple of errors. Sometimes it would be a slight grammar error or a slight math error. Sometimes it would say something that was completely the opposite of what it said in the next sentence. Fortunately there was enough content that I was able to work through these but to notice an error every 50 pages or so was grating. A book in its tenth edition should not have these issues.

Because I found this book to be a great supplement to my macroeconomic studies I'll rate it highly. For the crazy prices that publishers charge for textbooks, this book deserves another rundown from the editors.

Absolutely excellent teacher; learned so much from this book!

This is a brilliant book. I bought this as a lay person to understand how banking and the markets work. Its so well written and easy to follow. He really breaks things down so you can really understand, he does not use abbreviations without explaining them, and he guides you to comprehend everything. its clear he really knows banking and the markets and really teaches you. I've learned so much, and now can follow and understand the news and papers, and annual reports much better.

This guys the real deal in the Monetary Policy world and knows his stuff.

This was for class and I definitely recommend actually reading it. The first 1/3 is mostly technical, getting the reader caught up in some basic economic theory and adding in some definitions so you have a background knowledge going forward. The rest of the text you can really tell that the author has a passion for the subject; it gets more and more "impassioned" if that can be used in a monetary policy/economics sense. It is the dismal science after all.

Neuroscientists La Cerra and Bingham suggest our minds are forever in flux, and succeed in challenging if not outright convincing us. In lay terms, they illustrate how we are not so different from the bee and E. coli, because these lower life-forms are also ever-adapting creatures, facing stimuli that help or hinder existence and adapting on the fly. Human minds are no different, they argue; consider how our moods change when we're hungry or sated. La Cerra and Bingham add that humans possess a "social signature" that's a collection of mutating selves depending on upbringing, workplace and other contexts. Midway through the book, the narrative segues into a quasi-self-help guide, delving into the neuroscience of subjects like beauty (it's not quite in the eye of the beholder) and personal fate (it may be determined by the always developing history of our thoughts, actions and reactions). What is disorienting about the authors' investigation, however, is its eclectic, almost flippant array of reference points... La Cerra and Bingham are more convincing when they rely on accounting metaphors, such as humans having "inner statisticians" that collate all social interactions and expectations. But whether these precepts are demonstrated through apt allusions, or curious ones, they coalesce simply because they're so sensible.

Recently, much has been published about the nature of our minds. Bingham, the author of previous books and films on the brain, teams up with award-winning researcher La Cerra to present a new theory of how our individual minds and selves develop. Although they agree that evolution has shaped our brains, they don't think it has played as large a role as evolutionary psychologists like Steven Pinker (How the Mind Works) argue. Instead, we inherit brains able to create a "database" of recorded experiences and outcomes, which enables us to make useful current decisions. Since no two people have the same experiences, each is unique and will react differently. Some behaviors like dependency and depression, the authors suggest, may be more adaptive than they seem, given a person's particular situation. Also, since we can learn from new experiences, it is possible, though difficult, to reprogram our minds. Although intended for a popular audience, with no footnotes and only a basic bibliography, this book is based on a wide range of recent neurobiological research. But far from being dry, it is full of interesting anecdotes and intriguing speculations. The book's clear, entertaining style and intriguing theories make it a highly appropriate purchase for all libraries.

Although their conception of the mind competes with others, such as that outlined by evolutionary psychology, these two neuroscientists deliver a commendably clear text perfectly suited for the interested general reader. Their central idea revolves around the adaptive representational network (ARN), a fancy way of saying "memory." La Cerra and Bingham illustrate what an ARN is via the livelihoods of E. coli, bees, bears, and, later in the book, humans. All four, representing animals in general, can't do anything without a positive inflow of energy from the "biological marketplace." The authors explain that shopping for energy, so to speak, underlies the "adaptive" element in an ARN: an E. coli will check its locomotion every four seconds, and change it according to where the food is located. To telescope the authors' argument, the human mind, particularly the sense of self, is a high-level integration of ARNs, unique to each individual's remembered experience in ever-changing social worlds. An extraordinarily clear account of the "world knot."

As a practicing psychiatrist, the relationship between mind and brain is ultimately fascinating, although it is unlikely ever to be solved to everyone's satisfaction. Yet we feel compelled to try, and LaCerra's and Bingham's skillfully presented book is a giant leap toward correlating brain events with human experience and behavior. The lucid writing and excellent examples make it both intellectually stimulating and a joy to read. Although I agree with previous reviewers that this book skirts the many spiritual, religious, and philosophical issues involved in this ancient "world knot," the authors' intention was clearly to remain within their paradigm, and they elegantly achieved their goal of describing the physical concomitants of human subjectivity. In no way does such scientific research negate transpersonal efforts to explore the mystery of consciousness as a thing-in-itself, but instead lays a firm foundation for philosophers to build on. This book explains things so well.

This book is a great read for anyone who is intrigued with the workings of the human mind and nervous system, the capabilities of the mind, the tiny neurochemical happenings that make possible all the automatic and deliberately chosen activities of our mind and body, and language/neurolinguistics.
The Origins of Minds sort of has the intriguing, poetic sensuality of Diane Ackerman's writing, but Minds feels by far more scientific. The sophisticated academic/medical/scientific language was worth the slight challenge it presented; the clarity with which the book's concepts and premises are laid out is awe-inspiring. Everyday metaphors are employed to make the most complicated concepts accessible, yet the authors let you know when they are oversimplifying, and why. The book is written with respect for the reader who perhaps studied biology a long time ago, or wants to nurture a recently born interest the incredibly interwoven workings and capabilities of body and mind.
The book describes some of the less complex formations and abilities of "mind" as it operates in E. coli bacteria with memories just 4 seconds long, and in bees who know to return to successful nectar-gathering sites yet know to adapt to a better segment of flowers when the previously rich source tapers off. You learn about instinct, reflex, and neocortical activity-- a person's uniquely personal history that archives the environment, inner state(s)-- the idiosyncratic `adaptive representational network' which provides you at every moment with access to memories of past situations similar to the present one, and a menu of past and present choices accompanied by how each past choice has worked out and how each choice you might make now is most likely to affect your hierarchically organized motivations and desires.
Living things are programmed to repeat behavior that assists in their survival and reproduction. The Origin of Minds explores and challenges this premise again and again, and it's quite elucidating and satisfying. What are our instincts and what ultimate purpose do they serve? How are instincts different from reflexes and why should it matter? How (and even why) does our DNA pass along certain physiological adaptations down through the generations? How is the hierarchy and intensity of our various and often competing goals organized in our psyches? What motivation underlies the development of a unique, individual personality and how does this conflict with or relate to our need for social cooperation for survival? You'll find it here.
Also, the book describes the workings of dopamine, seratonin, noradrenaline, depression and even antidepressant medication with tremendous clarity and detail. Having often seen those subjects treated by authors in a cursory, oversimplified way (to the point of being unhelpful) for the non-medical professional, I deeply appreciate this book's responsibly fleshed-out information. Very accessible. An extremely enjoyable read.

Mother Lode of metaphor

La Cerra and Bingham provide a starting point for those wishing to gain some knowledge of the roots of human behaviour. They stress the individual - individuals ranging from the mundane to those breaking "patterns," exhibiting "abnormal" behaviour or showing creativity. They open with an explanation of how difficult it is to explain individuality in Darwinian terms, but acknowledge that evolution is basis of how our brains operate. With rich use of metaphor, and many examples from fiction, the text is free-flowing, if not "flowery." Devoid of footnotes and including what can only be described as a [sad] bibliography, the book is of mixed value.
The authors are exceptional at relative comparisons. In order to place humans in a frame of reference with other creatures, they describe the environmental sensitivity of a bacterium, E. coli. They explain that its information retention capacity lasts a duration of but four seconds. In that brief span it must decide whether to pursue possible "food" or rest and wait for a change in condition. They show that such decisions must be made by every living creature - how much energy to expend on survival strategies? This pattern, with added ramifications as you progress through more complex life forms, particularly ourselves, requires increasingly intricate reasoning powers. In humans, many of these powers have been shown to be dependent on various neurochemical processes. To the authors, this rules out any
genetic "absolutes" driving behaviour at the molecular level. This "strawperson" has been built and scattered before. La Cerra and Bingham raise their stook, then destroy it gently - but a straw man remains a straw man.
A number of scholars and their findings in cognitive studies are addressed, but only someone with a rich knowledge of the field is likely to perceive this. Many ideas are presented, but you remain unclear of their origins. Antonio Damasio and Steven Pinker are listed in the Bibliography, but the text makes no references to their views. Careful reading suggests neither scholars had much impact on the development of the authors' ideas. Daniel C. Dennett is given thanks "after publication" [??]. One yearns to read that "correspondence." To a degree this book insults the reader they wish to reach - those wanting to understand human reasoning and behaviour. It is difficult to accept that an inquiring reader is going to be diverted by a few pointers to further information. The reader is left with the impression that the authors have a new, innovative concept of thinking and behaviour. Sadly, that's false.
The rich use of metaphor guides the reader over what might be otherwise difficult concepts. The issues in cognitive studies are not simple, however, and require more explanation than the authors' seem able to give. The metaphors, instead of aiding in the explanation, become roadblocks to legitimate understanding. The authors leave the impression that all the issues in cognitive science have now been resolved by their book. After only a moment of consideration, he relates the history of Coca-Cola and its effect on the world in some detail. He is then asked to talk about the Great Pyramids. Finally, he is asked to provide "a study on the greatest contemporary Arab luminary." Plunging into deep research on a man known as "The Doctor," our narrator is visited at his home by the committee, who want him to change the subject of his research. When he hedges, one of the committee members stays with him to make sure he picks a new topic. Eventually, our narrator is driven to murder, and the committee condemns him to a bizarre sentence. This powerful, thought-provoking novel offers a fascinating glimpse of the mechanics of repression worldwide. Egyptian novelist Ibrahim, a major figure in the Arab literary world, has published many novels, short stories, and other works. This is the first English translation of an Egyptian novel first published in 1981. With a plot and theme harking back to the works of Kafka and Camus, the novel tells the story, in first-person narration, of a man who is called before an ominous committee to defend himself against unnamed charges. The author deliberately keeps vague all the elements of his tale, including the setting (though it is assumed to be Cairo), which adds to the reader's feeling of complete strangeness and even sense of vertigo. As part of his defense before the committee, the narrator gives an interesting discourse on the history of Coca-Cola and its place in modern world culture, but when he presents facts about a mysterious figure known as "the Doctor," the committee attempts to silence him. The results are far from the usual thing--especially when the narrator murders the most antagonistic of the committee members and accepts a punishment that borders on the fantastic. This spare, swift and ultimately chilling fantasy of interrogation and persecution in contemporary Egypt suggests that all of us are controlled by forces we often have no inkling of. The novel begins with a frustrating and unexplained interview conducted by a group known simply as the Committee. A young man is forced to belly dance, drop his pants and underwear (and worse), then to name the 20th century's most important achievement. He is also asked to write "a study on the greatest contemporary Arab luminary." The young intellectual struggles to find a subject for his project, but he soon settles on a doctor with a reputation for international philanthropy. After a year has passed, the Committee appears at his apartment to inspect his progress. Just as abruptly, they depart, leaving one of their members behind to monitor the narrator's every move, until finally he is driven to murder his observer. For this crime, the Committee sentences him to a bizarre punishment worthy of Dante. In keeping with Ibrahim's reputation as the "Egyptian Kafka," the Committee is anonymous, oppressive and symbolic of familiar social forces though recent world events will prompt readers to associate it with more specific clandestine organizations. Ibrahim (The Smell of It) creates a highly claustrophobic mood with elegant descriptions and the smooth incorporation of historical detail, bringing global depth to this work. As the dark narrative proceeds, its critique of broader social madness masquerading as civilization becomes clearer and clearer, making this a provocative addition to Ibrahim's respected oeuvre.

Speaking truth to power . . .

First off, a caveat: The editorial reviews (above) for this fine, provocative novel do the disservice of revealing its entire story like Cliff Notes. Best to avoid reading them if you prefer the pleasure of discovering a novel's storyline as it's revealed by the author.

In its 166 pages, this short novel has a lot on its mind. Readers eager to defend the benefits of unchecked globalization will no doubt take offense at the critique of its impact on lesser developed countries, including Egypt and the rest of the Arab world as represented here by Sun`Allah Ibrahim. Meanwhile, its vision of the individual overwhelmed by social and political forces beyond his understanding applies anywhere dissent is suppressed and might makes right, which can happen even in self-proclaimed "free" societies.

There is plenty of Kafka and some Orwell in these pages, and the narrator's sardonic point of view owes much surely to the author's experience as a political prisoner during the tumultuous years of revolution in his home country. One does not suffer physically and psychologically for one's ideals and look respectfully at those whose chief objectives have been to amass power and wealth at the expense of others. Readers of any political persuasion should find the ironies at the center of this book a thought-provoking challenge to whatever they believe about what it means to be an individual in a binary world where people increasingly show up as survey results, digits on spreadsheets, and numbers in headlines.

"The Committee", by Sun Allah Ibrahim joins the work of writers including Franz Kafka, Albert Camus, and Fyodor Dostoevsky. The comparison that is most easily drawn is to Kafka's, "The Trial". While this may be the easiest parallel to draw it suggests this is just a variation on a theme and that would be a disservice to this book and the author.
The unnamed narrator first petitions a committee. This group is made of members we are told virtually nothing about. Our narrator only makes vague references to what a positive decision from this committee would mean to him. Whatever his goal, it must be of great value for during his first audience he is not only queried on his knowledge, his is degraded, pointlessly degraded. The similarities to other writings remain in regard to arbitrary and absolute authority; together with the perversions of thought and justice they produce. Unlike, "The Trial", there is no evidence he stands accused of anything on his initial hearing. The committee after a long delay sets for him yet another task, and when they learn of how he proceeds despite the blockades put before him, the group visits him, with a single member remaining. This shadow is the same individual who so crudely humiliated him before. The treatment again begins with the total invasion of everything that is held private for the individual, with the result that our narrator commits a crime, comes once again before the committee, and receives a surreal sentence.
Throughout this fairly brief work the narrator in his appearances before the group, and in his private thoughts often expounds on his theories with seemingly bizarre examples. What becomes bizarre is that in their way his arguments make sense, and this is after Coca-Cola, peanut farming, cigarettes, anti-depressants, and presidential elections explain his thoughts.
The sentence our anti-hero receives is described by the publisher as a new realm of satiric surrealism. Whether satiric or satanic, the ending is not one you will forget, and you may likely be drawn to read the work of other writers who wanted their subjects to stand firmly in existential space.

About the Author
Raya Dunayevskaya, who died in June 1987, was the founder of Marxist Humanism in the United States. Philosophy and Revolution is the second work of what the author called her "trilogy of revolution."
