the first Kindle sheetmusic experience

I'm running Sony PRS-T1 ebook reader.
Because it's just 6' device, I was not sure it would be enjoyable or not.
While this book is for melodic instrument - trumpet and furthermore it's a kind of method rather than songbook, it's quite readable.
I'm quite satisfied with this kindle edition.
Vizzutti's book itself does not need more review.

This is a great book for any aspiring trumpet player. I used it for Regionals this past year, and though the piece was very challenging it came out phenomenal. Great condition and I would recommend it to any trumpet player.

Grandson loves his trumpet

Our grandson started playing the trombone 3 years ago. He is doing very nicely with it; but preferred to try the trumpet. This year I bought him the 3 trumpet books so he can help himself and review what he knows. He is doing great with the trumpet now. He hopes to play in the high school marching band with either the trumpet or trombone. Then he plans to go to OSU and be with TBDBITL.

About the Author
Kirk VanGelder started teaching automotive technology to college students at Clark College in 1983, and then high school students at the Clark County Skills Center in 1990. While he wasn't a natural teacher when he started, he worked hard and kept trying new things. Over time, he has had success engaging students through the use of intense questioning and discussion. This has helped his students learn how to think critically, as well as learn how to ask questions of themselves, and then to search out the answers.

In his search for engaging teaching materials, Kirk stumbled across the CDX videos in the mid 90's. After spending several years raising money to buy the materials, a laptop computer, and a LCD projector to use them on, he was off on a journey that ultimately led to working with CDX and other instructors to author his first textbook; Fundamentals of Automotive Technology: Principles and Practice and a second book Fundamentals of Maintenance and Light Repair. Kirk is appreciative of the many instructors who contributed to the textbooks or reviewed them as they was being written and edited.

Kirk grew up in Washington State, and still resides there with his wife of 27 years, and their 13 children. Kirk's passion is helping instructors improve their teaching/coaching skills. He continues to look forward to working with auto and diesel instructors across the US and Canada.

Access Code includes student supplements not access to CDX Online program

Full disclosure, I am a rep for the publisher. Please note, the "Access Code" with the book provides access to student supplements, including: MP3 audio files, glossary, case studies, etc. It does not provide access to CDX's online Light Vehicle program.

If you buy a used book, you may not have access to the MP3 audio files and other supplements, if the access code has been redeemed. Also, the online program is only available at your college bookstore. Very often it is less expensive to buy the bookstore bundle (book and online access pack) vs. buying the components separately. Also, if you find an online access pack for sale online, you are at risk of purchasing access to an older version that no longer exists.

Rediscovering Muslim Sicily

This volume fills a major vacuum in the literature on Muslim Sicily. The titles in English on this long period of medieval history of the largest Mediterranean island - a crossroads of cultures at the heart of the inland sea - are few and far in between, and to date no volume in English had tried to encompass the subject so thoroughly, and if I may add in this successful manner. As Prof Henri Bresc states in the preface to this book, the author puts into proper perspective a period which is still evident in the heritage of Sicily. Bar a few minor shortcomings - including some proofreading slips, and a certain amount of overlap between chapters - this one-volume history of Muslim Sicily in the ninth to eleventh centuries makes accessible to a wider audience a substantial volume of research undertaken by Prof Leonard C Chiarelli, who is librarian at the Aziz Atiya Library for Middle East Studies at the University of Utah, over the past three decades or more. The work also builds on the author's PhD on Sicily during the Fatimid Age. It includes a lengthy introduction (xliv pages), followed by chapters on the Arab conquest of North Africa and the Aghlabid dynasty (1-12), the Arab conquest of Sicily and Aghlabid rule (12-66), the establishment of Fatimid rule in Sicily (67-94), the Kalbid dynasty (95-142), the social structure (143-208), the economy and trade (209-288), and Islamic culture (289-336). Chiarelli's discussion of the subject leaves few stones unturned (as may be seen from the endnotes to the individual chapters, as well as the appendices, long bibliography, and index), as he leads the reader through the thick and thin of the Arabic sources and secondary bibliography in numerous references. Most of the texts used by the author are inaccessible in English translation, which means that they are only available to the scholar with specialist knowledge of the subject and language. As a book on 'Muslim Sicily', the volume might have benefited from an extra chapter connecting the subject of Muslim Sicily - as opposed to the narrower definition of a Muslim-governed Sicily which is adopted here - down to the period of the Norman conquest and the 'final chapter' of Sicilian Islam - for a big chunk of Sicilian society stayed Muslim until the twelfth century. But that would have meant a thicker volume, among other practical considerations. This is definitely a must-have book for student and scholar alike.

Tremendous Achievement, Superb Resource

Professor Chiarelli's book about the roughly 250 year period of Arab rule in Sicily fills a huge gap. His richly documented and finely detailed work is the only comprehensive overview of this period available in English. Prior to this, the English language reader could only get glimpses of it in the historical work of David Abulafia (another author I would highly recommend), M.I. Finely, Denis Mack Smith, and others; although, as a rule, most Anglophone writers, particularly British historians tended to brush over this period in a mad dash to extended elegies about Norman rule in Sicily and the south of Italy in general. Travel writers, too numerous to mention, all touch upon this period to some extent, too. However, none of them gives more than a hint of what occurred during this period, and most end up getting bogged down in trying to draw tenuous (though not entirely inaccurate) connections between contemporary Sicilian language, cuisine, and culture with this Arabic heritage. And, while there is a fair amount of research available in Italian and French, the really substantial work in Italian done in this field was that of Michele Amari, over a century ago!

Chiarelli's text, as his exhaustive list of works cited indicates, incorporates virtually every resource available and adds his own analysis as well. As another reviewer notes, Chiarelli's narrative is essentially utilitarian: it is well written, but can be dry, almost textbook (in the worst sense of the word). Nevertheless, it is highly readable and can offer much to the layperson and scholar. Moreover, in light of the dearth of information we have about this period, the rather linear, dry narrative is perhaps ideal, because it achieves what it aims to do: give a thorough overview of the various aspects of this period, ranging from the military conquests, immigration, economy, agriculture, religion, literature, etc. while also situating it within the larger contexts of the Muslim world and the Mediterranean.

Finally, for those readers like me, Italian Americans of Sicilian descent, this book offers an accessible route to understanding a crucial period in the island's history; indeed, along with the period of Norman rule that followed, one can easily say, this was the island's golden age. If there is one criticism I can make of the book it is with the maps. The one map of Sicily is nestled in the middle of the book, rendering the center of the island difficult to view without breaking the binding. A better option would have been a foldout map. Similarly, the map fails to delineate the three administrative regions that are repeatedly mentioned in the text: Val di Mazara, Val di Noto, and Val Demone. Those minor quibbles aside, this is a welcomed resource for students of Sicilian history, Arab expansion in the Mediterranean, Islamic culture in southern Europe, etc. It is recommended to academic and leisure readers alike.

Wonderfully written!

I found this book very informative as well as interesting. It's look at Sicily from an angle that is not often heard of unless in certain scholarly groups. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Sicily or to anyone who is interested in how the Muslim religion has affected parts of Europe. Great Read!

Olympus E-PL1 For Dummies Is A Must-Have For This Camera

After purchasing my Olympus E-PL1 and reading the included user guide several times over, as an experienced semi-pro photographer with a wide-range of camera experiences, ranging from the all-manual ones (circa 1956) through today's modern full-auto DSLR's (Canon 40D, etc.), I came away still having a few vague misgivings and uncertainties which left me uncomfortable.

Even though the manual is technical and not a tutorial, I felt that I should have been able to easily glean the most important necessary information on how to set up and customize the camera's menu system and understand and use the camera's subtleties effectively - in fact, I thought I had.

Nevertheless, I felt that there was a chance that I had overlooked or misunderstood some important menu settings, given the shear complexity and extensive customization the camera is capable of and so I ordered this book after seeing the excellent reviews and high opinions submitted by other readers.

After it arrived I immediately read it from cover to cover with camera in hand and was amazed and shocked as to the level and degree of misinformation I had come away with by only studying the user manual cold. I say shocked, because, with my level of experience and equipment understanding, one would naturally assume that even the most obtuse manual would not be that difficult for both basic and critical settings to be mastered. Was I wrong!

After reading this book for only a few minutes, it became obvious to me that I had completely overlooked many of the co-dependent and subtle modes of advanced operation the many menu settings can employ, none of which were clearly spelled out in the highly condensed manual. Although the author has rightfully (given the title) kept the discussion level geared toward beginners, she has at the same time remained so precise and complete in her explanations that I consider this book a model of technical writing clarity for both amateur and professional readers alike.

During my photographic years I have read hundreds of technical manuals and over 1,000 equipment user guides and this book ranks into the upper 1 percent for clarity, completeness, and engaging personal style, which is a welcome relief for such otherwise dry material.

In addition to the Olympus E-PL1 specific material, I consider this to be one of the very best summary introductions to photography in general, and modern digital cameras in particular, that I have ever come across. The author seems to have a real talent for focusing upon the important while clearly explaining the complex, and avoiding the usual tangents into the irrelevant and/or trivial details many technical writers commonly fall victim to.

The book is well-laid out with appropriate charts, tables, illustrations, and color photos and, with the author's personal suggestions, tips, and observations, the volume provides a wealth of succinct but not too brief material on both the camera and common photographic techniques.

In my opinion, this book is a "must have" for the Olympus E-PL1 owner and for owners of other cameras having similar capabilities - the later models such as the E-PL2, PL3, etc. Hopefully, the author will find the time to update and extend this book to include these later cameras.

Very worthwhile - so much better than the Olympus manual

The menu system of the Olympus PEN E-PL1 is many layered, complex and confusing. The manual Olympus provides is not the greatest. A friend recommended this book to me and I ordered it in the Kindle version for reading on my PC. It is the first Kindle book that I've ever used on the computer. I don't have a Kindle. The content is very well written and helpful and I like the fact that I can use the search function in the Kindle PC software to find answers to specific questions. This book is excellent and I highly recommend it for people who have this camera.

As an ebook this is not the way to go. I'm finding that reference materials do not make very good ebooks.

I would not advise buying this as a reference manual for the camera, unless it is purchased as a 'real' book.

Actually the contents of this is very good, it was just poor judgement on my part to purchase as an ebook

Can't put it down, must read!

WOW! I've known Mr. Carruthers for years but I didn't know all of the methods he's deployed over the years. To read this is to finally have a real Blueprint of what to do to build your network marketing business and create massive Momentum and create multiple layers of success in your orgamization. Since I satarted reading it, I can't put it down. This is now one of the books I'll definitely recommend to my team and other network marketers.

Brian Carruthers a Great Teacher/Leader....

I met Brian some years back when we were with the same company.. then recently I heard him on a call with Richard Brooke.. after the call I looked Brian up and called him... he answered his own phone which in itself is quite impressive..... We had a really nice chat. I ordered his book and could not wait for it to arrive... it happen to be the weekend so I took it with me too my cabin and what a joy it was to read... I found it so informative that I own a hard copy, which by the way is well highlighted/underlined through out the book as well as a kindle version so it is always with me.. Brian has a great concept of what it takes to build this wonderful business of Network Marketing and this book is generic so that it applies to a number of MLM businesses... I highly recommend it for anyone and it is now sits on my office desk along with my other personal go to library..

This picture book is done in the same style as the Lego City Adventure books, but is a different size and format. It is not one of the Leveled readers. The artwork is bright, vibrant and fun. In this book a new building is going up in Lego city and from excavation to completion we watch the workers in Lego city construct a new building. It is a fun, light, easy read that will be enjoyed by young readers.

This is a book about how to build a building. There is no actual story/plot (like the other Lego City books). Bummer. This book may be good for a younger child who doesn't need a story plot. My son (5 years old) likes the pictures and descriptions though.

This book is AMAZING for your little one that's learning to read. My son received these in 1st grade and was able to read them! The pictures are bright, the stories are fun and the characters are our beloved Lego men! I highly recommend these books!

About the Author

J. Charles Sterin is an award-winning documentary filmmaker, investigative television journalist,  and screenwriter. Over the course of his 35-year career, Sterin has produced over 60 hours  of television documentaries, including episodes of A&E Network’s primetime series Investigative Reports and Ancient Mysteries, and documentary specials aired on PBS. Sterin co-produced a national media project with ten of the world’s leading humanist thinkers (including anthropologist Margaret Mead, psychologist Carl Rogers, and anthropologist Ashley Montagu) and was selected by the Poynter Institute to produce its seminal PBS documentary series NewsLeaders on the  leading figures of American news media. Sterin is fascinated with the future of media technologies, especially the evolution of the Internet, mass media convergence, and artificial intelligence-based expert systems. He has developed  innovative approaches to producing short-form documentary videos in integrated content delivery platforms for “blended” online training and higher education. In 2001, Sterin joined the faculty of the University of Maryland University College–a world leader in web-enhanced and online college programs–where he has applied his interests in the evolution of mass media and media-based blended learning applications to the creation of a number of UMUC’s mass communication courses. Through these popular courses, Sterin has introduced thousands of students across the country and around the world to the study of mass media. Today, he continues to develop innovative approaches to connect and communicate with a diverse body of students in multimedia-enhanced face-to-face and online teaching environments, as well as pursuing his work as a documentary filmmaker, screenwriter and author.

Printed Text meant for a Binder

I was a little disappointed when I received this "book," because it is basically a printed e-text. It came in a shrink wrapped package, and if you didn't realize the book was not bound, you will get a pleasant surprise when you have to pick up all the pages from the floor. I kind of knew this was going to happen, since I read other reviews, but it just seems like a big scam and a rip off since the book was required for one of my classes and it is fairly expensive.

On the plus side, the e-text access card ( and my communication lab) is nice and it gives you a lot of interactive features to help learning the concepts presented in the "book." All the pages are printed in color, and it fits nicely in a 1.5" binder. The content is decent and explains concepts in an easy to understand manner.

No problems with shipping, handling or payment, everything was prompt and in good order!

I can't even believe this text book cost $84. It's not a book. It's loose leaf paper. And the pages stick together...well that's a mis-nomer, the pages are not even cut in places, so you need scissors just to turn the page. This thing is not even a bound book be ready to get a binder to use this thing. I'm so tired of paying outrageous prices for text books.

This is one of my favorite textbooks.The content is very interesting, there are a lot of visual elements in the book, which brake up the typical textbook monotone. I didn't have the product key for the internet component, but there are multiple ques for added content on the web. As a journalism major, I will probably keep this book for reference.

Though accepting the Bleulerian term schizophrenia, by now in general use, the authors have used it to indicate not the sickness of an individual–as in the traditional medical model–but a peculiar pattern of communication inseparable from the other patterns of communication observable in the natural group (in this case, the family) in which it manifests itself.

Starting from the position that modern sciences concerned with communication emphasize the central role of paradox as the source of paralyzing disturbances as well as of creative transformations, the authors demonstrate that it is possible to intervene in a family in schizophrenic transaction by devising original and paradoxical methods in order to release the action-pattern from disturbance to transformation. The counterparadoxes generated in this process, illustrated through a great number of examples, are rigorously analyzed in accordance with the conceptual models provided by general systems theory, by cybernetics, and by the pragmatics of human communication.

The reader will recognize, in the cases presented, the stimulating originality and efficacy of this approach, one whose interest exceeds the purely clinical and which offers new points of departure for an ecologic vision of human relationships.

This book will make the brilliant work of Mara Selvini Palazzoli and her gifted team more widely known in this country. The internal consistency of their approach–combining a systemic theory of family with a systemic theory of change–results in a therapy that is elegant, powerful, and economic. Using their knowledge of families as natural, rule-governed systems, the team proposes a hypothesis to explain the function of a problem in the family. They then base an intervention–paradoxical or otherwise–upon this hypothesis. The intervention serves to validate (or disprove) the hypothesis and to suggest further moves. The moves themselves are astoundingly compact. Palazzoli and her team are masters of the art of co-opting the resistance. They use the forces deployed by the family against change to produce change. It is as if one were to use the rules of Alice's Looking-Glass Kingdom to break the looking-glass. After the solemnity which surrounds the practice of the therapeutic art in this country, it is refreshing to find a practice which relies upon drama, wit, surprise, and (of course!) paradox.
