Gestures and Acclamations in Ancient Rome (Ancient Society and History), by Professor Gregory S. Aldrete

Life in Rome was relentlessly public, and oratory was at its heart. Orations were dramatic spectacles in which the speaker deployed an arsenal of rhetorical tricks and strategies aimed at arousing the emotions of the audience, and spectators responded vigorously and vocally with massed chants of praise or condemnation. Unfortunately, many aspects of these performances have been lost. In the first in-depth study of oratorical gestures and crowd acclamations as methods of communication at public spectacles, Gregory Aldrete sets out to recreate these vital missing components and to recapture the original context of ancient spectacles as interactive, dramatic, and contentious public performances.

At the most basic level, this work is a study of communication -- how Roman speakers communicated with their audiences, and how audiences in turn were able to reply and convey their reactions to the speakers. Aldrete begins by investigating how orators employed an extraordinarily sophisticated system of hand and body gestures in order to enhance the persuasive power of their speeches. He then turns to the target of these orations -- the audience -- and examines how they responded through the mechanism of acclamations, that is, rhythmically shouted comments.

Aldrete finds much in these ancient spectacles that is relevant to modern questions of political propaganda, manipulation of public image, crowd behavior, and speechmaking. Readers with an interest in rhetoric, urban culture, or communications in any period will find the book informative, as will those working in art history, archaeology, history, and philology.

Vale Aldrete: A Gesticulatory Tour de Force
By A Customer
Aldrete's insight and clarity illuminate this subject far beyond the pale beam of traditional historical scholarship. The author writes so well, and has such a clear understanding and enjoyment of his subject that a potentially banal subject springs to life. The illustrations by Alicia Nowicki are crisp and also show a deep knowledge of the subject. This book is a true gesticulatory Tour de Force. I look forward to further books by the same author.

An Excellent Beginners Guide To Western Magick
By Vinter Varg
I am in total disagreement to the first reviewer of this
book. It is an excellent and easy to understand beginners
guide to ceremonial magick, which is more than I can say
about Steve Savedow's book with the same title, which I don't
recommend at all for beginners. So what is the big deal about
there being a lot of material here that can be found in Mr.
Tyson's other books? The same can be said of several of Israel
Regardie's books, but no one complains about that! The BIG difference hear is that Mr. Tyson's takes this information and creates a step-by-step study guide, that is very pragmatic and
safe. If you have never owned a book by Donald Tyson and want
to learn about High Magick, this is an excellent place to start.
After studying and finishing the study program of this book, you
may then want to purchase his other books on magick and/or pick
up a copy of Donald Michael Kraigs "Modern Magick," which covers
a certain amount of material the Mr. Tyson does in "The Magician's Workbook," but goes a bit further into more advanced
techniques and practices.
On a final note I'd like to add that there are many books on
the market with the same title, often covering the same subject.
The idea that Llewellyn is doing some sort of injustice to
Mr. Steve Savedow just because they released a book on magick
with the same title as his is absurd. Perhaps the first reviewer
of this book is upset because Mr. Tyson's book is a much, much
better beginner's guide to magick than Mr. Savedow's!

Great Book
By A Customer
A great book, I have aquired many books on magic and magic systems throughout the years and none were quite presented in an easy to understand and practise manner. Tyson seems to have layed everything out nice and neatly even with a schedule on the recommended way to follow the excercises contained in the book. A small note on some of the negative reviews, the section on "ego destruction" is untrue, it has nothing to do with ego destruction, merely a mental excercise to help you learn a little bit of control. The excercises are stated simply with no fluff, just the meat. There are hundreds of books about magic that are extremely complex. So few are simple and well laid out, this book is a valuable resource for a beginner.

How magick books should be written
By Lacerti
In The Magicician's Workbook, Donald Tyson guides the novice reader through an occult training program revolving around the Golden Dawn-style of ceremonial magick. He has trimmed away all irrelevant information so that all that is left is the practical application.

The book presents detailed descriptions of 40 different exercises, from simple meditations working up to more elaborate rituals. How this book is different from others on the subject is its specific explanations of every action, especially the internal actions and visualizations which are the key to the successful practice of any kind of magick. Also of note is that all exercises are complete and self-contained, meaning if it builds on a previous exercise, it isn't just casually mentioned for the reader to go and leaf through the book to find it. They are all described in exhaustive detail from beginning to end, making it much easier to follow. The end of the book provides a structured development program using the exercises listed over a period of ten months, allowing for a gradual evolution, making sure the basics are mastered before moving on to the next level. There is also a "maintenance cycle" for the practitioner to follow in order to prevent a regression in abilities.

Because this book centers around practicality, much background information is not included, leaving the student to search elsewhere for the knowledge leading to a deeper understanding. For a stronger foundation in ceremonial magick, I recommend blending training with this book and Donald Michael Kraig's Modern Magick. However it is my opinion that after having worked through even just The Magician's Workbook alone, the magickian will be more than capable to practice magick in any style.

Built to Last CD: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies, by Jim Collins

"Good to Great is about turning good results into great results; Built to Last is about turning great results into an enduring great company." so write Jim Collins and Jerry Porras in this groundbreaking book that shatters myths, provides new insights, and gives practical guidance to those who would like to build landmark companies that stand the test of time.

Drawing upon a six-year research project at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business, Collins and Porras took eighteen truly exceptional and long-lasting companies and studied each company in direct comparison to one of its top competitors. They examined the companies from their very beginnings to the present day, as start-ups, as midsize companies, and as large companies. Throughout, the authors asked: "What makes the truly exceptional companies different from other companies?"

Collins and Porras go beyond the incessant barrage of management buzzwords and fads of the day to discover timeless qualities that have consistently distinguished outstanding companies. They also provide inspiration to all executives and entrepreneurs by destroying the false but widely accepted idea that only charismatic visionary leaders can build visionary companies.

Filled with hundreds of specific examples and organized into a coherent framework of practical concepts that can be applied by managers and entrepreneurs at all levels, Built to Last provides a master blueprint for building organizations that will prosper long into the twenty-first century and beyond.

Amazon.com Review
This analysis of what makes great companies great has been hailed everywhere as an instant classic and one of the best business titles since In Search of Excellence. The authors, James C. Collins and Jerry I. Porras, spent six years in research, and they freely admit that their own preconceptions about business success were devastated by their actual findings--along with the preconceptions of virtually everyone else.

Built to Last identifies 18 "visionary" companies and sets out to determine what's special about them. To get on the list, a company had to be world famous, have a stellar brand image, and be at least 50 years old. We're talking about companies that even a layperson knows to be, well, different: the Disneys, the Wal-Marts, the Mercks.

Whatever the key to the success of these companies, the key to the success of this book is that the authors don't waste time comparing them to business failures. Instead, they use a control group of "successful-but-second-rank" companies to highlight what's special about their 18 "visionary" picks. Thus Disney is compared to Columbia Pictures, Ford to GM, Hewlett Packard to Texas Instruments, and so on.

The core myth, according to the authors, is that visionary companies must start with a great product and be pushed into the future by charismatic leaders. There are examples of that pattern, they admit: Johnson & Johnson, for one. But there are also just too many counterexamples--in fact, the majority of the "visionary" companies, including giants like 3M, Sony, and TI, don't fit the model. They were characterized by total lack of an initial business plan or key idea and by remarkably self-effacing leaders. Collins and Porras are much more impressed with something else they shared: an almost cult-like devotion to a "core ideology" or identity, and active indoctrination of employees into "ideologically commitment" to the company.

The comparison with the business "B"-team does tend to raise a significant methodological problem: which companies are to be counted as "visionary" in the first place? There's an air of circularity here, as if you achieve "visionary" status by ... achieving visionary status. So many roads lead to Rome that the book is less practical than it might appear. But that's exactly the point of an eloquent chapter on 3M. This wildly successful company had no master plan, little structure, and no prima donnas. Instead it had an atmosphere in which bright people were both keen to see the company succeed and unafraid to "try a lot of stuff and keep what works." --Richard Farr

From Library Journal
What makes a visionary company? This book, written by a team from Stanford's Graduate School of Business, compares what the authors have identified as "visionary" companies with selected companies in the same industry. The authors juxtapose Disney and Columbia Pictures, Ford and General Motors, Motorola and Zenith, and Hewlett-Packard and Texas Instruments, to name a few. The visionary companies, the authors found out, had a number of common characteristics; for instance, almost all had some type of core ideology that guided the company in times of upheaval and served as a constant bench mark. Not all the visionary companies were founded by visionary leaders, however. On the whole, this is an intriguing book that occasionally provides rare and interesting glimpses into the inner workings and philosophical foundations of successful businesses. Recommended for all libraries.

From Booklist
No tables, charts, or obfuscatory language interfere with the presentation and development of consultants Collins and Porras' premise that visionary companies withstand tests of time and fads. On the basis of five years of research, they pinpoint six characteristics of the best American institutions: (1) premier in their industry, (2) widespread admiration from businesspeople, (3) multiple generations of CEOs, (4) an indelible imprint on society, (5) multiproduct (or multiservice) cycles, and (6) pre-1950 roots. The authors' findings confirm a few management theories but contest many others. More important, they demonstrate the hows of good management in detail, with readable case histories (IBM, Merck, Motorola, Walt Disney, among others) and studies of contrasting corporations, and they include guidelines for those striving for long-lasting success. The definition of company core values
By frumiousb
Simply for the definition that Collins/Porras make of Core Values, this book is worth the price of admission. The formula which they repeat throughout the book (Core Values = Core Ideology + Purpose) is worth repeating more often, and something that anyone who concerns themselves with strategy should remember.
One of the things I think _Built to Last_ does particularly well is to not only explain what their ideas are, but to also explain what they aren't. They seem to understand the confusion possible in their ideas and take the time to anticipate, correct, and clarify. This is a rare characteristic in business writing, where the normal problem I encounter with books is that the author assumes that everyone is on the same page in more ways than one.
Must for people in the business of corporate strategy.

Inspiring, but lacking analytical rigor.
By Benjamin Rossen
This is an inspiring book, and informative. It answers the "what" question convincingly. I missed answers to the "why" questions. Why, for example, are successful visionary companies characterized by their emphasis on ethical standards? There are many possible explanations: the staff of the company are inspired by the ideals and give more to their employer; the companies reap payoffs in the long term from grateful recipients of their honorable deeds; the companies acquire a good reputation which increases sales and hence profits. More interesting, is the question of the logic of ethics in the business game - not even touched by these authors.

According to Jim Collins and Jerry Porras, it does not matter what the company ideology is, as long as it is passionately believed by the management and employees. I find this a dubious claim, and not supported by the data. The ideological frameworks of the companies that were studied are not interchangeable, not for the trivial reason that the ideology of another company happens not to be the one believed by each of them. Boeing is unlikely to spend money on a program to cure river blindness in Africa. Why does Merck do this? Clearly, a pharmaceutical firm does well to invest in a reputation for medical generosity that flows from a passion for making people well? Merck is purchasing precisely the trust that pays-off in the medical market place. Trust reduces transaction costs, and in some cases is almost as good as a monopoly. Boeing, on the other hand, must buy a brand name attached to their dedication to engineering excellence. It does matter what companies are passionate about.

My company operates on the Internet. Our pledge includes the words: "The tragedy of the commons is the propensity of users to take more from the commons than they give. We undertake to contribute more to the commons than we take. Our presence shall make the Internet safer, more useful and greater fun." Why is this a suitable ideology for our company? The answer is not that this is one we happen to believe in, and feel passionate about - although we do. Rather, this ideology is strategically fitting. We enhance to our brand name, and therefore the value of our software, by adding our reputation to the web applications we write.

In one of our daughter businesses we are a broker of information from merchants to consumer (information about products that are available) and from consumer to merchant (we generate real time demand curves for a large range of commodities). We have pledged not to become a trader. Why? In ethical terms, we should not be a trader because our insider information would give rise to conflict of interest. The trust that we gain by not being a trader, and hence remaining a disinterested supplier of market information, enables us to broker Coasian agreements with reduced transaction costs between the parties on the Internet. The advantage is large. It is on the Internet commons that trust is scarce. We are able to purchase this by foregoing some potentially profitable trades, and that pays us more in the long term in our role as an information service provider.

Our ideology was designed to give us the greatest possible strategic advantage in our markets. That is not to say we do not believe in our ideals, but that the nature of our ideology is important. It does matter what we believe. It matters what you believe, and it matters that you understand that it matters.

I strongly recommend "The Modern Firm" by Roberts. Read this alongside "Built to Last". Roberts is a harder read, but he gets under the logic of corporate dynamics better than Collins and Porras. Because "Built to Last" is characterized by an ubiquitous analytical paucity, Jim Collins and Jerry Porras' interpretations of their data are not always correct. That is a pity. Their findings are exciting, inspiring even, and the book despite its limitations is a good read.

A must for anyone interested in human performance mgmt.
By Wiley Reader
An instant classic for those of us who consult with organizations that seek to improve performance. Universal principles that have stood the test of time have been presented in a concrete and interesting fashion. Only three notes of caution are advised. First, the selection and head-to-head comparsions of the companies presented represents a relatively small sample from which broad and important generalizaions are drawn. Second, what would the implications be of a "fall from grace" of a company honored with the title of "visionary company?" Finally what if your company,(like a few of my clients)is short term focused toward becoming an attractive take-over target? Do these habits have short term value? Understanding Silence and Reticence: Ways of Participating in Second Language Acquisition, by Dat Bao

What is the state of that which is not spoken? This book presents empirical research related to the phenomenon of reticence in the second language classroom, connecting current knowledge and theoretical debates in language learning and acquisition.

Why do language learners remain silent or exhibit reticence? In what ways can silence in the language learning classroom be justified? To what extent should learners employ or modify silence? Do quiet learners work more effectively with quiet or verbal learners? Looking at evidence from Australia, China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam, the book presents research data on many internal and external forces that influence the silent mode of learning in contemporary education. This work gives the reader a chance to reflect more profoundly on cultural ways of learning languages.

Review
'Speech is silver, silence is golden' is an age old adage forgotten in the modern day education. Dat Bao explores the potential role silence has in the classroom by analysing its types and functions both for the learners and the teacher. The book is a new concept in pedagogy well conceived and articulated.

Written in a highly readable, non-technical language, this book tells us that silence has a special place in the language learning process; it supports learning in ways that often escape our attention. Silence is not to be frowned upon, the author says. Rather it has to be skilfully managed to improve learning.

About the Author
Dat Bao lectures in the Faculty of Education, Monash University, Australia and has worked closely with universities in the US, the UK, Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam.

Amazon.com Review
From Joseph Slate and illustrator Ashley Wolff, creators of the popular Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten, comes this lively celebration of the 100th day of kindergarten. In honor of this festive milestone, each student must bring "100 of some wonderful, one-hundred-full thing!" to school the following day. That night, we see Adam the alligator making a fort of 100 Popsicle sticks, Brenda the beaver falling asleep over her paper chain of 100 colorful loops, and Christopher the cat lamenting his toppling 100 blocks. Meanwhile, Miss Bindergarten does 100 sit-ups before making 100-day punch (with 100 ice cubes and 100 cherries), painstakingly decorates her classroom, and concocts miscellaneous math-oriented activities. Just before class, "Jessie pokes her polka dots. / Kiki carries tarts. / Lenny hugs a bagful of a hundred candy hearts." The rhyming text bounces through the celebratory preparations of the whole kindergarten class--from Adam the alligator to Zachary the zebra--until the whole class reunites for a party that's perhaps a hundred times more fun than they imagined! Kids will enjoy examining and reexamining the humorous pictures of the animal students battling with various crafts, and they'll adore the loving and purposeful Miss Bindergarten--a Border collie with a heart of gold... and 100 bows on her dress. (Ages 4 and older) --Karin Snelson

From Publishers Weekly
In this exuberant follow-up to Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten, the border-collie teacher kicks off a celebration of the 100th day of class by asking her students to bring in "100 of some wonderful, one-hundred-full thing!" The results, reported in alphabetical order of the student's name and species, brim with the humor of children giving their ingenuity full rein. Brenda the beaver almost dozes off while gluing a 100-link paper chain, and Ian the iguana proudly escorts "a relative who's lived a hundred years." As readers of the previous book will anticipate, Miss Bindergarten works every bit as hard as her students: she pins 100 bows to her dress, makes a paper snake with 100 colorful scales and puts together a roomful of related activities. Once again, Wolff's sturdy, genially observed illustrations prove a perfect match for Slate's rhyming text, and together they build momentum to the big event?a party that's certain to inspire similar festivities in kindergartens everywhere. Ages 3-6.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2-Miss Bindergarten, who helped readers learn the alphabet in Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten (Dutton, 1996), returns in this lively picture book. To celebrate the 100th day of school, she asks her students to bring in "100 of some wonderful, one-hundred-full thing." As each of the children, whose names begin with letters from A to Z, gather together 100 objects, their teacher makes her own preparations, shopping for food and supplies with her pet cockatoo, preparing refreshments, and jazzing up the classroom. Always stylish (even though she is a dog), Miss Bindergarten decorates her dress with 100 multicolored bows. Creativity, hard work, and enthusiasm are catching and the children strive tirelessly to bring in imaginative projects. On the day of the celebration they arrive with 100 balloons, 100 ants in an ant farm, 100 marbles, and other surprises. Brightly colored pictures filled with details, some on double-paged spreads, and a sprightly rhyming text with the repeated phrase, "Miss Bindergarten gets ready for the 100th day of kindergarten," make this a great read-aloud or read-alone.

Terrific for the classroom!
By A Customer
Thank you again, Joseph Slate and Ashley Wolff!!! From a teacher's perspective, Miss Bindergarten Celebrates the 100th Day of Kindergarten is a wonderful follow-up to Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten. Slate's rhythmic, repetitive language make for a perfect read-aloud that children can participate in. Wolff's detailed illustrations reveal much time spent in REAL classrooms. Children will love seeing the similarities between their own classrooms and the beloved Miss B's. I'll certainly be reading this to my own Kindergarteners on our 100th Day celebration, and I encourage other teachers to do so as well!

When Bilal and his sister Ayesha move with their family, they have to attend a new school. They soon find out that they may be the only Muslim students there. When Bilal sees his sister bullied on their first day, he worries about being teased himself, and thinks it might be best if his classmates didn’t know that he is Muslim. Maybe if he tells kids his name is Bill, rather than Bilal, then they would leave him alone. Mr. Ali, one of Bilal's teachers and also Muslim, sees how Bilal is struggling. He gives Bilal a book about the first person to give the call to prayer during the time of the Prophet Muhammad. That person was another Bilal: Bilal Ibn Rabah. What Bilal learns from the book forms the compelling story of a young boy grappling with his identity.

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-6–A well-done treatment of a subject not often seen in children's picture books. Bilal transfers to a school where he and his sister are the only Muslim children. After an incident in which a boy pulls off Ayesha's headscarf, Bilal decides to hide the fact that he is Muslim until an understanding teacher, who is also Muslim, gives him a biography of Bilal ibn Rabah, a black slave who became the very first muezzin because of his steadfastness in the face of religious persecution. Attractive watercolor illustrations emphasize the parallels between the persecution faced by Bilal ibn Rabah and that faced by the American boy. This is an important book for most libraries as it will enhance discussions of cultural diversity and understanding.–Kathleen E. Gruver, Burlington County Library, Westampton, NJ

From Booklist
Gr. 4-7. Bilal and his sister, Ayesha, who are Muslim, start school in a new city. At first Bilal tries to blend into the largely non-Muslim environment, calling himself Bill and ducking out of sight when two boys try to pull off Ayesha's head scarf. Encouraged by a sympathetic teacher and his own faith, Bilal finds the courage to stand up with his sister the next time the boys tease her. Bilal and Ayesha point out to their adversaries that they too were born in America and that being American means that they can wear what they want. By standing up for his sister, Bilal earns the boys' respect and takes the first step toward a possible friendship. The story is told in picture-book format, though the text is longer than that of most picture books. In the illustrations, the students appear to be in middle school, but the book is accessible to younger children as well. Appearing on nearly every double-page spread, large-scale watercolor paintings clearly portray the actions and attitudes of the characters. A good starting place for discussions of cultural differences, prejudice, and respect for the beliefs of others. Carolyn Phelan

Orphan Train Rider: One Boy's True Story, by Andrea Warren

Between 1854 and 1930, more than 200,000 orphaned or abandoned children were sent west on orphan trains to find new homes. Some were adopted by loving families; others were not as fortunate. In recent years, some of the riders have begun to share their stories. Andrea Warren alternates chapters about the history of the orphan trains with the story of Lee Nailling, who in 1926 rode an orphan train to Texas when he was nine years old.

Grade 4-8?Between 1854 and 1930, more than 200,000 orphaned and abandoned children from the cities of the eastern seaboard were "placed out" to new homes and families in the midwest and western states. Warren's account of the "orphan-train" phenomena, and of one man's story of how it affected his life, is an excellent introduction to researching or discussing children-at-risk in an earlier generation. The book is clearly written and illustrated with numerous black-and-white photographs and reproductions. The chapters alternate information about the largest agency, the Children's Aid Society, and its history, with the story of Lee Nailling, from whom the author has gathered the facts of his own childhood journey to Texas and his eventual reunion, late in life, with some of his long-lost siblings. Human interest is skillfully interspersed with factual information to create a fascinating book about a social movement that predated today's foster homes, adoption agencies, and homeless shelters. Annette R. Fry's The Orphan Trains (New Discovery, 1994) is written for the same age group and efficiently provides detailed information for research and reports. Eve Bunting's Train to Somewhere (Clarion, 1996), a picture book, tells the story for younger children. Together these books offer opportunities for discussion about the sometimes happy and sometimes misguided efforts to care for the orphaned and abandoned in our country's past. But if only one book can be acquired, Warren's title offers a wealth of information and is rich in human interest. It should be the primary purchase.?Shirley Wilton, Ocean County College, Toms River, NJ

Gr. 4^-6. From 1854 to 1930, the orphan trains took homeless children from cities in the East to new homes in the West, the Midwest, and the South. In Warren's book, one man's memories of his childhood abandonment and adoption give a personal slant on the subject. Chapters telling the story of Lee Nailing, who took an orphan train west in 1926, alternate with chapters filling in background information about the trains and the experiences of other children who rode them to their destinies. Throughout the book, black-and-white photos show both the people and places in Nailing's story and the broader topic of the orphan train experience. Children will find this a good resource on an intriguing subject. Carolyn Phelan

A Wonderful True Story!
By Mary Burnight
This book is well written with much historical information about the time of Orphan Trains. What I enjoyed among the chapters was the train ride of Lee Nailing, then his adult life which ensued his growing up....but most of all, I just loved to know of his first week in Texas and his eventual beginning 2 days with the Nailing family: so interesting for me to see him rise above bitterness within a supportive family!

Orphan Train Rider: One Boy's True Story
By Kindle Customer
Interesting subject but not presented well.
Also I was extremely disappointed in discovering this was not a "full size" book, but a mere 80 page story. I was shocked when I reached the last page, expecting the story to develop further. I even reviewed the book thinking I must have missed several chapters somehow.
It was my error for not checking how long the book was before I ordered, but I definitely feel short changed.
