About the Author

Rashid A. Saeed received his PhD in wireless communication from UPM, 2007. He served as senior researcher in MIMOS Berhad & then in Telekom Malaysia R&D where he was awarded the "platinum badge" as one of the best researchers. He is currently in electrical engineering, IIUM. He has published over 80 research papers, tutorials, talks, books, & book chapters on UWB, Femtocell, cognitive radio, & radio resources management. He also holds 2 U.S. patents & has filed 8 more. Saeed is a certified WiMAX engineer (RF and core network). He is also Six Sigma™, certified Black Belt based on DMAIC++ from Motorola University. He is a senior IEEE, IEM Malaysia, and Sigma Xi member. He is one of the contributors to the IEEE-WCET wireless certification, in its earlier stages.

Bharat S. Chaudhari graduated in Industrial Electronics Engineering from Amravati University, India, in 1989 then received his Masters in Electronics and Telecommunication and PhD from Jadavpur University, India, in 1993 and 2000, respectively. Presently, he works as the Principal of the International Institute of Information Technology (I2IT), Pune, India. Prior to this position, he had been the Dean of Planning and Development and Dean of Academics, and was heading the Department of Advanced Networking and Telecommunication at the same Institute. Dr. Chaudhari has more than 22 years of experience in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate as well as research in the fields of communication engineering, optical networks, wireless networks, and converging telecom technologies. He has authored more than forty research papers in international and national journals and reviewed conference proceedings in the field of optical, wireless, and telecom technologies. He was the recipient of a grant from Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, under the Fast Track Scheme for Young Scientists for pursuing research. He has organized two International Workshops in the field of Low Cost Wireless Technologies in association with the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy, and the International Telecommunication Union - Bureau of Telecom Development (ITU-BDT). Dr. Chaudhari is a Regular Associate to the Wireless Networking Group, ICTP, Italy, for the years 2007 - 2013. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers, Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India), and a Senior Member of IEEE. He is a Chairman of IEEE, Pune Section in 2011. His biography is included in a Marquis Who's Who in Science & Technology for the year 2006.

Rania Abdelhameed received the B.Sc. degree in Electronics Engineering (Computer Engineering) from the Sudan University of Science & Technology (SUST), Khartoum, Sudan, in 2001, & the Postgraduate Diploma in Information Technology (Advanced Networking & Telecommunications) from the International Institute of Information Technology (I2IT), Pune, India, in 2003, & the M.Sc. & PhD. degrees from the University Putra Malaysia (UPM), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 2005 & 2010, respectively. In May 2009, she earned the IEEE Wireless Communication Professional (IEEE WCP) certificate of the Wireless Communication Engineering Technology (WCET) Exam. Since 2001, she has been a Teaching Assistant at the Department of Electronics Engineering at the SUST & a part time engineer at the Computer Center, SUST. She has been member of the technical staff of the Broadband Wireless & Blue Nile project, Space Telecom & Cushnet, Khartoum, Sudan, 2003, & technical staff of Web Education (WebEd), UPM, 2005. She was awarded a Postgraduate Training Fellowship to pursue the M.Sc. & PhD degrees from the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) formerly TWOWS, & the Academy of Science for the Developing World (TWAS), Trieste, Italy.

Needs Rethinking Before New Edition

I'm using this text for teaching zoology at a small liberal arts college. My PhD is in wildlife and population genetics. Three main complaints thus far, and the semester just started: 1) The writing lacks clarity. For scientists, I'm surprised the writing is as obtuse as it is. 2) This is a zoology text, so why are almost all of the examples used in the chapters on genetics and reproduction focused on humans? Students will have already covered those topics ad naseum in the biology courses they took as prerequisites to this course. There are plenty of existing non-human animal examples, I suggest the authors integrate them into future editions. 3) In Chapter 6, when discussing polymorphism, the authors talk only of using allozymes---ALLOZYMES---for studying population genetics. Then just to make sure you noticed how out-of-touch they were with modern genetics, they share a table from Hedrick's work in 1984. We haven't got to the chapters devoted to phyla yet, so I may update this review.

About the Author

Miguel F. Acevedo has 38 years of academic experience, the last 20 of these as faculty member of the University of North Texas (UNT). His career has been interdisciplinary, especially at the interface of science and engineering. He obtained his Ph.D. in biophysics from the University of California Berkeley and master's degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from Berkeley and the University of Texas at Austin, respectively. Prior to UNT, he was at the Universidad de Los Andes in Merida, Venezuela, where he taught for 18 years. He has served on the Science Advisory Board of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and on many review panels of the U.S. National Science Foundation. Preface

This book came about from a conversation in the Hotel Mercure bar in Brussels, Belgium. We had just finished the first day of client training in our Bluetooth solution, and hadn't said a single word about our implementation yet! Why? Well, Bluetooth was so new that nobody knew much about it, there were no textbooks, no courses, nothing but a thick specification document and a few white papers. So before we could begin to explain the fine details of what we'd done, we had to spend a day explaining the Bluetooth specification. After the first beer, we thought somebody ought to write a book about Bluetooth; after the second beer, we thought we should do it; after the last beer, we had a contents page.

Why the title? Well, "Connect without Cables" is basically what Bluetooth started out doing. It's a short range wireless communication system, and the word "wireless" pretty much says it all. The first applications people came up with were all about throwing away the clutter of cables that plagues modern portable devices—Bluetooth took away the cable dangling from a headset, removed the clutter of wires at the back of a PC, and let a phone talk to a PDA without needing a cable that took up more pocket space than either device. Now there are more imaginative uses than straight cable replacement, from small wireless office networks to the much hyped Personal Area Network, or PAN. But the basic functionality that Bluetooth provides is still the same: connection without cables.

During the last year or so, we have seen a Bluetooth system design evolve from abstract idea to evaluation board. Along the way, we struggled to understand the Bluetooth specification. Some parts of it don't make sense until you've read later parts, some parts don't make sense until you've tried them out, and some of the parts we started with will never make sense and have since been corrected. The specification is in a much better state than the preliminary versions we started with, but like all such things, it's still not an easy read. So this book aims to provide people working with Bluetooth an easier introduction than the one we had.

A new version of the Bluetooth specification (version 1.1) is due to be published during the 4th quarter of 2000. In order to keep this text consistent, we only consider the existing version 1.0B specification except for one or two proposed corrections for v1.1 which are especially worth mentioning here. Although these are mostly minor improvements and clarifications to the existing 1.0B specification, it is important for the reader to keep abreast of any revisions particularly since there may well be other refinements before the major evolution which Bluetooth 2.0 will represent. To facilitate this, there is a companion Website to accompany Bluetooth: Connect Without Cables where we will place any errata and useful updates to the text as Bluetooth evolves.

About the Author

JENNIFER BRAY is a consultant at CSR. She holds a doctorate in wireless communications and has nearly a decade's experience in communications product development, including wireless ATM, ADSL, Ethernet, CDMA, and GSM systems.

CHARLES F STURMAN manages TTPCom's Baseband Bluetooth hardware development program. He has more than ten years' experience in designing low-cost, low-power wireless communications and computer systems. Charles holds a Bachelors in Electronics and a Masters degree in Information Engineering.

An excellent Bluetooth resource.

Connect Without Cables is the best of the current books for developers and implementers who are making their way through the complexities of the specification for Bluetooth wireless technology. The authors take the us through the multiple levels from RF through real world applications in a consistent and insightful fashion. Additional sections help the reader understand the context of the technology and hint at its exciting potential in the marketplace.
I found this book to be much less of a walk through the specification and more of a view through the eyes of one who has actually implemented Bluetooth and knows where the trouble spots are. The reader is given insights into some of the real thorny issues, and even given suggestions on how to address them.
Although the subject matter is at some times quite dense, the authors do an excellent job, consistently introducing the topics in an overview, and always following with a good summary of the salient points in each section. Readers in the USA should be prepared for an occasional non-American term, phrase, or spelling which may not be listed in the text's extensive and otherwise quite useful glossary, reminding us that Bluetooth wireless technology is truly of global interest and potential impact.

About the Author
Robert W. Christopherson is Professor Emeritus of Geography, having taught 30 years at American River College, and is the author of the leading physical geography texts in the US and Canada. Christopherson attended California State University-Chico for his undergraduate work and received his Masters in Geography from Miami University-Oxford, Ohio. Geosystems evolved out of his teaching notes and was his graduate thesis; this is his life’s work. He founded the geography program of American River College faculty. His wife Bobbé is his principal photographer and has provided more than 300 exclusive photos for each of his books. Together they have completed nine polar expeditions (most recently in spring 2010). They attended the 2004 Arctic Climate Impact Symposium in Reykjavik, Iceland to acquire photo and video coverage and research.

Robert is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 1998 and 2005 Text and Academic Authors Association Textbook Award for Geosystems and Elemental Geosystems, 4e, respectively. He was selected by American River College students as "Teacher of the Year" and received the American River College Patrons Award. Robert received the 1999 Distinguished Teaching Achievement Award from the National Council for Geographic Education and the Outstanding Educator Award from the California Geographical Society in 1997. The Text and Academic Authors Association presented him with its Presidents' Award in 2005. Among many other things, Robert has been deeply involved in the development of Pearson’s Geoscience Animation Library, and he led the editorial board of Rand McNally’s Goode’s World Atlas, 22e.

Worked for school. A lot cheaper than campus bookstores.

I love Amazon for selling textbooks. They are so much cheaper than the campus bookstore. I ended up getting this book for 1/3 of the price the campus bookstore was selling for. The book itself is very informational and gets to the point. I love that it's not too big of a book as some textbooks are quite heavy. The CD-Rom that came with it is awesome too and very informational. I went into this class knowing nothing of this topic and came out feeling like I could be the weather girl for the local news station.

Pick the unbound version, you'll like it.

Enjoy the unbound edition better than other textbooks. Allows for easy photocopy or scanning of graphics, and you can take out the glossary and index to use as separate quick reference instead of flipping back and forth. The expense of the book was far less and I am probably going to save it as a future reference book because it doesn't cost me nearly as much. The textbook is good, easy to read, and has lots of helpful diagrams.
