Go for the Time Out series.

Compared to the Time Out series, the organization of this book makes it much harder to use. Time Out is more focused on the type of thing you're looking for. This book organizes by neighborhood. It seems to go on the premise that should you want a certain kind of food, you won't go from say, Admiralty to Central, for it. Lots of page turning, back and forth.
Design wise there's a lot of visual clutter. It also fall short of providing detail in the maps area. The poor design it harder to read...and downright annoying at times.
Where it is good is on restaurants, perhaps; and general necessary information on the basics of Hong Kong. also, can be good on the outer areas.
The maps in the back don't compare to Time Out series. It does come with a small map you can tear out, but even that is hard to use.
My feeling is that for some travelers this may have enough information or hit on the areas they may be most interested in, but as a total package...
if you're only buying one guidebook, go with Time Out.

Hong Kong Travel Guide Worth Reading
The Lonely Planet Hong Kong (Travel Guide) is a great source to have for travel.
The beginning of the book has great pages and the entire book is filled with quick facts.
Currency exchange is explained and hotels and restaurants are recommended.
The book also includes facts about Macau.
There are helpful phrases in Cantonese, but since Hong Kong is a former British colony, many Hong Kongers speak
English.
Buy and read this travel guide. You won't be disappointed.

Your Best Guide to Hong Kong

I love all the Lonely Planet guides. I used this one on my recent trip. It has so much information that was very useful. For example, it said that museums were free on Wed, so we saved some money and went on Wed. Also, it provided a bunch of veggie restaurants that weren't necessarily on the beaten path - and we tried almost all of them! The highlight was the Veggie Dim Sum at the Lock Cha Tea House which I would not have found without the guide.

The guide also comes with a pull out map, subway guides, and sensible information about the different areas.

Thoroughgoing book on dreams for those with health problems

I much enjoyed Patricia Garfield’s ”Creative Dreaming”, but was somewhat disappointed with this book.

Garfield had an accident in which she severely damaged her wrist. The doctor said it was just sprained, but a dream told her that it was broken, which turned out to be correct. On recovering, she decided to write this book about 1) forewarning dreams 2) diagnostic dreams 3) crisis dreams 4) post-crisis dreams 5) healing dreams and 6) convalescence and wellness dreams.

In this comprehensive book dealing with all stages of health crises and recovery, Garfield refers at length to many other writers on dreams throughout the ages, including Hippocrates, Asklepios, Galen, Artemidorus, Jung, Freud, LaBerge, Oliver Sacks and Kasatkin. She also refers extensively to many cases of injuries and illnesses and the respective patients’ accompanying dreams and their interpretations.

I myself was and am in a similar situation since I a couple of years ago also had an accident and subsequently had to endure several operations. But I remembered no dreams or nightmares reflecting the accident, the various surgeries and so forth. This might have had to do with my being given morphine and other strong pain-killers. As far as I can see, Garfield does not mention that pain-killers might impede recollection of dreams.

It was not until months after the last operation that I have begun to dream again.

Garfield being a dream expert obviously had no problems in remembering her dreams. However, not everyone recollects their dreams with ease. It would have been helpful had she indicated those remedies available to us that might aid our recollection, such as Vitamin B6, mugwort tea, guayana tea and so on.

She goes into much detail regarding how to relate our dreams to physical problems, Strangely enough, I have remembered no dreams whatsoever relating to the body parts that I have had problems with, not that I have been able to interpret.

She gives us many examples of how we can interpret body symptoms. For example, injured body parts are symbolized by broken building parts, defective objects and defective cars. Dreams of fire or heat = Body Part too hot. Dreams of fiery hair = headache. Dreams of fiery foods = having pain in stomach. Dreams of houses on fire = fever or burning sensation. Dreams of cold objects = inadequate blood circulation. Dreams of excessive water = body edema or mucous production. Etc, etc.

The author suggest how we can work with our health problems, for instance by drawing or painting our dreams, and includes various such drawings in the book.

The last chapter comprises a meditative journey to our inner dream temple. However, I found this journey much too long and detailed to be practicable, though it may be useful to some. The object of this long and laborious journey (which would take several days of meditation to complete) is to meet our inner guide, but I think a shorter process could have been much more helpful.

Thoroughgoing appendices list dream images relating to various disorders.

The book is well-written and thorough, perhaps too thorough, as I did not find it to be particularly readable – it was too full of dream statistics and the like.

Though I personally would not recommend that you read the book, it will probably be useful to many with health problems, especially those that are good at remembering their dreams. Use your intuition to feel whether this is the right book for you.

went to a psychic class and the instructor had lent her Patricia Garfield book out and it was never returned. this was the best book on dreams the instructor said she ever had. the last night of class i gave her the book and she was absolutely thrilled. thus i suppose you would say this book was good enough to give as a gift!

How to decode your dreams in order to have information about your health

It has been the first book I've ever read about dreams and health. Amazing.

The author says that most of the different methods to interpret dreams agree about the fact that a house can be a symbol of our body. If so, why don't we take a look at the condition of the house while dreaming? The electric system could be a symbol for our nervous system, or the heating system our circulatory system, and so on.

In this way we could have information about our health, sometimes before the potential problem occurs.

The book is packed with information about how to decode a dream . I give four stars only because sometimes is a bit too wordy.

Still, it’s one of the most important books I have about dreams. Highly reccommanded.

The devotional is intended to be part of the 40 Days of Community small group series. I read the devotional in conjunction with being a part of a six-week small group study in our church. If you have read Rick Warren's, The Purpose Driven Life, you will find this study is an extension of Pastor Warren's belief in God's five purposes for your life. In the devotional's introduction Pastor Warren writes, "The goal of 40 Days of Community is to water the seeds of purpose that may have been planted in you life through reading The Purpose Driven Live." It was a good supplement to the group study, but I, personally, would not read it as a devotional apart from the study.

Doesn't deliver

Our church did an all-church study using this 40 Days of Community Devotional and the Study Guide that goes with it. While I appreciated and valued its focus on building community, the devotional did become quite repetitive after awhile. I do NOT recommend pairing this with the Study Guide as I found the Study Guide to be a 'bait and switch' experience. It's title held out the hope for fostering more connection with each other but didn't deliver. A more appropriate title for the Study Guide would have been: 40 Days of Organizing Service Projects. If you really want to foster connections between people at your church, I'd recommend choosing a different product altogether.

Need momentums to do a good job...

The book shows momentum investing works. As the author mentioned in the book, it's not the book about asset allocation, but momentum stocks selection tool. So it's not easy to implement the strategies without using the screening tool on the web site provided by authors.

First came Value, now their definitive book on Momentum

Quantitative Momentum is a must read for any investor employing a Factor-based approach. Dr. Wesley Gray and Dr. Jack Vogel lay out a clear and compelling case for incorporating Momentum into any equity portfolio, particularly one currently focused on Value. While the philosophies underpinning Momentum and Value appear diametrically opposed to each other, the authors conclusively demonstrate that a portfolio comprised of both Momentum and Value picks will provide superior risk-adjusted return than either Factor alone. The book then details how best to build the Momentum side of such a portfolio (Dr. Gray having already thoroughly examined the Value side in Quantitative Value).

While the nuances of building a properly structured momentum portfolio are definitely important (and indeed the main purpose of the book), the most interesting takeaways for me were these:

Dispassion in the face of dogma

Whether it is Indexing, Technical Analysis, Fundamental Analysis, or something else, most investors follow a religion (or in some cases, more of a cult). Unfortunately, most of these investing religions tend to rely far more on behavioral dispositions rather than rigorous analysis. Even successful practitioners of Value investing (which has significant academic evidence to support it) can fall prey to their own behavioral biases and reject Momentum out of hand without considering the academic evidence. As the book details, this is a significant mistake (especially for Value Investors, who surprisingly have the most to gain from devoting a portion of their portfolio to Momentum). While it isn’t easy or particularly fun, dispassionately combing through the Investment literature to build a rigorous portfolio is the best and only way to achieve superior returns over the long run.

Conviction in one’s strategy

The very first chapter is appropriately titled “Less Religion: More Reason.” An important addendum to this maxim would be “More Faith in Reason.” Once you have identified a strategy (such as Momentum) backed by significant academic research and rooted in exploiting well-known behavioral biases, it is critical to stick with that strategy. As the authors repeatedly emphasize, both momentum and value strategies can experience several years of underperformance at a time. Recognizing that these periods are ultimately transitory (though they can be very painful) and staying true to the stock selection system is the most essential part of Factor investing and thereby earning superior returns over the long run.

Risk is multifaceted

If I had to level one criticism of the book, it is that while the authors touch on a variety of different risk metrics that are arguably more useful than simple standard deviation and market beta (including some that fall outside the scope of quantifiable metrics such as career risk), they don’t delve into a deeper discussion of which risk metrics are the most pertinent for a practitioner, and how the choice of risk metric can greatly influence portfolio construction. Perhaps this can be the topic of a future book.

Education is paramount

As the founder of Hughes Capital Management, educating my clients about Factor Investing and the need for a long time horizon is paramount. Successfully implementing a portfolio based on value, momentum, and other proven Factors is meaningless if your client panics during times of inevitable underperformance and market downturns. The authors highlight the telling case of Ken Heebner’s CGM Focus Fund, a very successful fund by any metric, whose average investor still lost money due to bailing at the absolute worst times. Constructing a clear, evidence-based portfolio that isn’t a black box is perhaps the most important part of the education process and building trust with the client. Quantitative Momentum, along with their earlier Quantitative Value, provides the foundation for that portfolio.

Probably couldn't find a better book on stock momentum systems at 4X the price

Given the right frame-of-mind I think most traders/investors will find this a very useful book. It fits right in beside the author's previous works "DIY Financial Advisor" and "Quantitative Value". (Wesley Gray sans Jack Vogel). It's well written and covers the topic well. It sets up a framework for understanding momentum investing and does a good job IMO of covering the upside - better long-term returns - vs the downside of under-performance for long stretches of time. I felt the authors were honest about how applicable this might be in the real world.

That said, I think it's important that folks considering buying the book understand that (in this writer's opinion) the book isn't going to supply you with a turnkey momentum trading system that you can live with day-in and day-out so if that's what you're looking for look elsewhere. What the book does very well, I think, is put you in the space you probably want to be working in for starting your own design of a momentum-based trading system that you can live with as part of a portfolio of systems, momentum being only one, working together.

If you're serious about the thinking side of trading momentum and/or if you trade any type of system with holding times in the 1-5 month range then I highly recommend this purchase. I can only imagine it having a positive long-term impact on your results which is what this is all really about anyway.

Worth every penny

Words cannot express how much I LOVE this book. I will hold on to this book as a reference as I go through my healthy hair journey. First, I will say that a lot of the things covered in the book can be found online on some blog or probably on youtube. The problem is that there are so many routines, products and noise about black hair on the internet that its became a challenge (at least to me) navigating this world and making sense of it all. After much research online, I was overwhelmed with the amount of information and no clear idea of how to proceed with my healthy hair journey (the different classifications of hair types did not help me either). With this book, everything is explained, from the structure of hair, to why certain products work well of some hair types and not others, and so much more. By the time I finished the book, I had a better understanding of how to create a hair care routine that catered to my specific needs. I love that a lot of the ingredients used in hair products are explained in detail. I also like the textbook lay out of the book (maybe because I have a science background). I have recommended this book to all my friends and family, with relaxed and natural hair and those in transition (like me). It was worth every penny. It will definitely be my go to for any information relating to my hair.

I feel like I just got out of Black Hair school! (and that is great!)

This is hands down the most informative book on how to care for black hair that I've ever read. It enables the reader to dig deeper into understanding why hair (black hair in particular) behaves as it does, and what can/should be done to ensure it reaches and remains at its optimal level.

I loved the scientific approach, from the descriptions of the layers and components of the hair fiber, to the in-depth exploration of the affect different chemicals/ingredients have on our hair. This allowed me to emerge with a better understanding of how products will alter my hair's condition, and most importantly, why. It is one thing to know (or read) that a product will strengthen the hair, and a completely different thing to understand that it will do so because it has keratin or another protein with small molecules that will bind with the hair fiber, filling in the weak points, therefore strengthening against breakage and giving the hair a thicker appearance. Yep! It's that kind of learning.

I also loved the fact that Audrey took the time to create a regiment builder chapter. It can be overwhelming after acquiring all of this knowledge to really know where to start in terms of selecting products, especially after you've looked at all of the crap you've been using and realized how horribly bad you've been to your hair. With that in mind, there is a breakdown of the different product categories needed, and samples of products that will work for each category. The great part is that once you read the book and learn about ingredients/label reading, and then become acquainted with the sample products; you'll know what brands are safe, but you'll also have the option to use them as a reference point for brands that may not be on the list.

For fear or writing a book myself by telling you EVERYTHING that's in The Science of Black Hair, I will just say that this is the kind of book you WANT to read if you, like me, felt lost and perplexed by your lack of progress in your hair goals. Youtube is an amazing resource, but it wasn't enough for me because seeing someone manipulating their hair a certain way, or using certain products with great results just did not translate when I tried to do the same thing. And though many are very knowledgeable, not all have the time or expertise to explain why a certain product may be working for them and not for you, or why you hair isn't thriving although you've been doing many, if not all, of the things they've done. Knowing how to control your hair is one thing, and knowing how to care for it is another. This book fills in the gaps left out by many youtubers, and in my case provides an even better source of knowledge.

I've already recommended The Science of Black hair to 2 friends, and a stranger on the subway who couldn't stop reading over my shoulder. For all of the information you get, it is well worth the price, so I will absolutely continue to recommend this book. (Oh, it helps tremendously if you take notes! You can refer to it when making changes to the way you care for your hair. I particularly love sticky notes!)

Textured hair bible

This is an excellent resource for anyone with textured hair (black, white, etc). I have been natural for about a decade, and I've only ever purchased one book on natural hair are and that was in 2003. I primarily educated myself on my transitioning/natural hair with the help of a lot of online resources. I remember reading Audrey's articles as "sistaslikk" on Fotki or LHCF and being so impressed that she was taking the time to do the research and taking the time to apply her scientific background to haircare. So when I heard she had written a book, I had to check it out.

This book will teach you everything you did not know about hair: what's happening at the subcutaneous level, within the hair shaft, scalp, how to test for moisture balance, protein balance, etc. There were plenty of things I did know before reading his book, but the true value of it for me is as a complete hair reference. It's not a book most would want to read from cover-to-cover, I use it as a reference text and haven't found a question yet that has not been addressed within its cover.

I bought one for my sister when she went natural and bought one for myself just to have in my own library. The only critique I have is the confusion about the different hardcover copies. I bought my sisters' copy first and it was hardcover with great color illustrations inside. When I bought my hardcover it everything was black/white (no color)! So heads up: buying hardcover doesn't mean you get color pages. I sent Audrey a message and she responded promptly and I was able to exchange for the preferred color copy. That slight issue aside, this book is definitely worth the money.

Note: this book is for those with all manner of textured hair; whether chemically treated or unprocessed.

About the Author
Alfredo Corchado is a Nieman, Woodrow Wilson, and Rockefeller fellow and the Mexico bureau chief of the Dallas Morning News. In 2000, he was the first reporter granted an interview with then newly-elected president Vicente Fox. He lives in Mexico City.

Childish, self absorbed account of what exactly?

I agree with all the one-star and two-star reviews. This book was a self-indulgent exercise that provided very little insight or information into the history and situation in Mexico. It read like a highschooler's diary instead of solid reporting. His writing coach to whom he gives praise in the Acknowldgements apparently didn't explain to Corchado the difference between journal writing and journalism. For comparison, I would hold up Luis Urrea's The Devil's Highway or William Rempel's At the Devil's Table regarding related subjects. Simply put, a good reporter removes himself from his story and acts more like a camera operator whom you completely forget is mediating between you the viewer and the story because the coverage is so absorbing and faithful. Instead, Corchado blathers on and on about his stupid girlfriend who was not even part of the story, about his mommy and daddy, about all of his high level contacts and great importance to the cartels (aka "name-dropping"),about his favorite restaurants in El Paso, but mainly about his favorite Mexican bands and songs, to which his English-speaking readers, for the most part, would not even relate. If you would like a better understanding of Mexican current affairs or other important issues such as immigration reform, I would pass on this book and would suggest that you check out Oscar Martinez's book, The Beast, instead.

Courageous Reporter, Devastation in Mexico

Nearly 100,000 people have been killed or have disappeared since President Calderon launched a war on cartels in 2006. At the time, less than 20% of those detained for drug trafficking were convicted, cops were underpaid and forced to rely on bribes to put food on the table, low rates of tax collection limited funding, and the education system was run by a corrupt union. (The country lost an estimated $50 billion to tax evaders, criminals, and corruption.) The murder clearance rate was less than 5% at the time.

July 2007 was the last time author Corchado felt safe in Mexico - that was when a U.S. investigator with informants inside the cartels told Alfredo, a reporter covering the drug wars, he'd been targeted for assassination. Alfredo been threatened three times previously, but this was the first time a timeline (24 hours) had been attached to a threat. Past threats brought bulletproof office windows, iron bars on his apartment windows, and a panic button connected to Mexican security consultants.

I particularly appreciated the author's coverage of how the drug trade got started in Mexico. Opium production began in the 1940s when the U.S. needed morphine for soldiers in WWII, even though growing it was illegal in Mexico. Pot cultivation also began at that time, and demand exploded in the 1960s and 1970s. A few Mexican families controlled the entire production and distribution chain (cartel men married each other's sisters), and law enforcement couldn't get past these family ties. By the 1980s, Americans also developed a taste for cocaine, and Columbia became a supplier. The easy route went through the Caribbean, but American ships and planes made that too risky. Thus, Mexico became the preferred, safer route. Tunnels crossing the U.S. border were dug as early as the 1980s, and migrants were often used as mules, sometimes unwittingly. Today the Sinloa cartel (the largest) can buy a kilo of South American cocaine for $2,000; its value increases to $10,000 upon entering Mexico, $30,000+ upon reaching the U.S., and $100,000 when broken up for retail distribution. An estimated 500,000 Mexican jobs are attributable to the drug trade.

Another key topic - why the explosion of violence that began in 2006? Corchado tells us that Mexico's long-time ruling party (PRI) had grown older, more divided, and weaker, leading to lessened authority on drug matters. Another factor - the new PAN government decentralized government, making it easier (per the author) for the rule of law to be taken over by the cartels. The cartels started running wild, fighting amongst each other as they too became divided. Mexico's murder rate had fallen 37% between 1997 and 2006 - by 2008 it had tripled. A key enabler - the Bush administration's rolling back Clinton-era restrictions on the sale of high-powered weapons such as the AR-15 quickly flooded Mexico with these weapons.

A third major topic explained in 'Midnight in Mexico' is how immigration into the U.S. evolved over the years. After the Great Crash of 1929, Mexicans within the U.S. were sent back by the busload, no questions asked. Then Mexican braceros helped feed Americans and worked in some factories during WWII. For example, in 1940 Nevada, there were about one million whites working in the fields; this fell to about 60,000 by 1942. After WWII came the Korean War, and a renewed need for workers from Mexico - especially to feed the growing baby-boomers. There were an estimated 430,000 Mexicans that entered the U.S. legally in 1957 - among them, the author's father. (All it took was 25 cents to cover a phone call to his sister in El Paso, the bus ride to her house, and a soft drink.) By 1964 the number living and working in the U.S. had doubled to five million. In 1993, Mexico's then President Salinas pushed for NAFTA passage among congressional leaders as a way to keep otherwise immigrants home and employed in Mexico. Instead, NAFTA brought in subsidized corn from Iowa that made it impossible for Mexico's two million corn farmers to compete - this both added to the number of immigrants to the U.S. and weakened the PRI at the polls.

Where did the directive come from to kill Corchado, and why? Eventually he learned that it originated from the head of the Zeta gang (Miguel Trevi�o Morales, aka 'Forty'), Mexico's #2 drug cartel. He was upset about Corchado's reporting of a government-brokered cartel peace, and also wanted to know Corchado's sources so they could also be eliminated. He didn't want government corruption brought out into the daylight as this risked their ability to conduct business. Corchado estimates the drug business in Mexico is a $10 - $40 billion business, compared to $22 billion in remittances. Kickbacks to the government ran as much as $500 million/year. (The peace plan fell apart after a few weeks.) Morales is now on Mexico's most-wanted list, with a $7.5 million bounty ($5 million from the U.S.) for his arrest and conviction, and reportedly sleeps in his car (along with hundreds of thousands of dollars to bribe his way out of capture), protected by 15 layers of security, often travels in ambulances or low-flying planes, and likes to live in the forests.

Bottom-Line: It takes incredible courage to fill author Corchado's shoes. I wonder what would happen to the drug war in Mexico if drugs were legalized in the U.S.
