Nuclear Power is our best option in many ways

The case for Nuclear power is put forward eloquently by Barry Brook. In clear and succinct language he point to the strong advantages of Nuclear power. These are clear and persuasive.

1. Because renewable energy & energy efficiency won’t solve the energy & climate crises
2. Because nuclear fuel is virtually unlimited & packs a huge energy punch
3. Because new technology solves the “nuclear waste” problem
4. Because nuclear power is the safest energy option
5. Because advanced nuclear power will strengthen global security
6. Because nuclear power’s true costs are lower than either fossil fuels or renewables
7. Because nuclear power can lead the “clean energy” revolution

The Case against Nuclear power by Ian Lowe is summarized below.

1. Because it is not a fast enough response
2. Because it is too expensive
3. Because the need for baseload power is exaggerated

Frankly the replies ignore the basic science involved in Nuclear power generation. Take point 5 for example, that producing nuclear power will increase the risk of nuclear war. The idea that spreading the technical capacity for nuclear power could spread the risk of nuclear war ignores several realities. First, that the knowledge of how to produce a nuclear weapon is spread widely through out the world. We cannot put that knowledge away now. On the other hand, the production of nuclear power burns the U235 that could be used for a uranium bomb. You need a concentration of U253 above 95% to make a usable weapon. Most countries that desire a nuclear bomb obtained one BEFORE building a Nuclear Power generation plant. This is because to make Uranium at the concentration necessary does NOT require a Nuclear Power Plant. To make the Plutonium necessary requires a totally different type of reactor than a power reactor. To get the necessary purity you have to put a slug of uranium in a special reactor for a couple of weeks and then remove it and purify out the Plutonium so that you only get PU 239.

The Plutonium in a power reactor is mixed with many other forms of plutonium that make it very difficult - to the point of ridiculous expense - to purify enough to make a reliable weapon.

So a Power reactor burns the potential bomb fuel and turns it into carbon free power.

The rest of points that Ian makes are a fair representation of the arguments against the use of Nuclear power. They are only convince those who are pre-disposed to oppose Atomic power.

About the Author
Sandra (Sandee) Barker Dunbar, DPA, OTR/L, has practiced occupational therapy with children and families for more than 20 years. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Therapy from Loma Linda University, her Master of Arts degree in Occupational Therapy from New York University, and her Doctor of Public Administration degree from Nova Southeastern University. Sandee’s initial occupational therapy work was in early intervention, neonatal intensive care, and community-based intervention. Sandee has enjoyed developing a variety of innovative programs for families, including a primary care approach to early identification of developmental issues in collaboration with a pediatrician, Dr. Rose Joseph. Currently, Sandee is Chair and Professor in the Occupational Therapy Program at Nova Southeastern University. Since 1995, Sandee has contributed to student learning at NSU while maintaining a link to clinical and community settings that are geared toward helping children and families. This includes supervising students in on-campus pre-service learning at the Baudhuin School of the Mailman Segal Institute, which serves hundreds of children with autism each year. Sandee continues to be committed to creatively finding ways to better meet family needs for children with and without disabilities. She is grateful for the support of family, co-workers, and friends for their shared vision of making life better for those in need.

Good way to do a lot of Micro questions if it's your weak subject.

I had a hard time studying for Step 1. I found this book helpful in allowing me to go over questions that were focused on microbiology itself. The book is organized into sections based on different bugs/fungi so you can work on particular subjects that you are weak in. Also the explanations provided are helpful. The book is good for helping to verify if you are actually grasping what you are learning. I would recommend the book if you have the extra time to spend on Micro. It would be best to work through it over an extended period of time. It is not useful for cramming.

A Solid Outing for the Series

What the villagers of Drim fear are ghosts in the castle turn out to be smugglers, but are they guilty of multiple murders? Inspector Blair convinces his superiors that the murders have been solved, but Hamish Macbeth’s Highland intuition knows better. This is a solid outing and a good introduction to the series for new readers. Except for Mrs. Wellington, who is trying to marry off Hamish to her niece, most of the offbeat Lochdubh villagers are not in this story, and they are missed. Priscilla and Elspeth only make the briefest of appearances. New readers will not understand why Hamish is missing his wildcat Sonsie, who is still in the wild. One hopes Beaton will finally bring Sonsie back in the next book. As far as other series developments, after an “All About Eve” situation, Hamish’s arch-enemy Inspector Blair attempts to murder a young officer he sees as competition. Blair, who started out as a curmudgeon bureaucrat in this light-hearted mystery series has now become criminally dangerous. Hamish has become one of literature's most beloved characters.

This was the usual neat Hamish Macbeth mystery novel. Love the style of writing and the expansion of all the interesting characters. Can't wait until the next one.

Though a ghost plays a minor role in the story, New developments in several backstories are interesting Hamish is still on pins and needles at the end of the story. What I would like to see is Sonsie come back permanently into Hamish's life legally so he can keep her.

Lovely friends to lovers romance!

Accidental Bride is the third in the Beaufort Brides series, about a trio of sisters and their very eccentric grandmother. It's finally Kelly's turn, the last one to still be living with her grandmother and the youngest of the Beauforts. She's pretty much resigned to her single state and hasn't thought too much of the future and her own wishes. That all changes when she heads to Las Vegas for a wedding with her best friend Peter. One night of drunken revelry, and somehow they've ended up married to each other! Pretending to be blissfully in love for a few weeks before quietly seeking an annulment is the plan, but now that Peter's finally got a chance to show Kelly his real feelings about her, he's not going to give her up so easily.

I quite enjoyed this story of two people who finally make the transition from friends to lovers. Though Kelly has cut off any possible romantic thoughts of Peter for years, he hasn't, and when they marry he honestly believes Kelly wanted it too, and not that she wouldn't remember it! I really loved seeing both points of view in the story. Peter works slowly but surely to convince Kelly that it's actually a good thing that they got married, and that she can count on him for more than just friendship. Kelly is rather blown away by the whole thing, and truthfully quite scared of change. But she is starting to see Peter in a whole new light, which is rather disconcerting for her. Their tentative steps toward intimacy result in realistic lovemaking as they decide that they might as well enjoy the fruits of their temporary marriage. It's a sweet and sensual love story, with some good hints as to the next series that will revolve around this setting. 4 stars.

Minor flaws, but absolutely awesome romantic read!

This was a great ending to a the trilogy. I love the writing style and enjoyed the other two books. Other reviews have hashed out the content, but I want to add this. The large majority of romance novels rub me the wrong way because they are beyond belief. Normal people don't fall into bed and then trade wedding vows. I think what I loved most about this book is that there is a backstory between Peter and Kelly. Their love did not just happen, it's been happening and they're just now figuring it out.

One hundred percent honesty. This is a five star book content wise. It is just not edited as well as the others in the series. There are places where his was used when it obviously should have been hers and other similar situations throughout the book. It will only take away from the story if you are (a) a grammar obsessed picky person or (b) you are missing half a brain. It's obvious what should be there so move on.

Overall Noelle Adams is a great author. This was the first series of hers that I have read and now I can't wait to get the rest of her books!

Very Average

I'm all for a friends to lovers romance and was really looking forward to this one. Again like with book 1 in this series, the author did a mediocre job in delivering the hea. I actually have to say that the h annoyed me throughout the book because she kept saying that they couldn't be together. I felt like the H did all the work in this one by arranging honeymoon weekends and he tried to make her dreams come true. Unfortunately the h doesn't respond very well. I'm glad that Ms Adams is done with this series because I'm not sure I can take the stuffed cats anymore.

A Book Guaranteed to Spark Spiritual (and Spirited!) Discussions about TV

Diane Winston's new book, "Small Screen BIG PICTURE," was produced by a group of scholars as a challenging "reader" for college students. Over the years, Baylor University Press has produced a number of great choices like this that explore spirituality and popular culture--and this is a truly BIG book, weighing in at more than 500 pages.

I'm writing this review not for college students or teachers who already are hearing about this book if they are interested in these issues. (Diane managed to pull together a number of leading lights in this field of research to write the book's various sections.)

I'm writing for the hundreds of thousands of readers out there who coordinate small discussion groups, preach to congregations or teach in secular small-group settings. This is a challenging, provocative look at the spiritual themes in a remarkable set of TV dramas--the blossoming of major dramas in the first decade of the Third Millennium (and the decade shaped by 9/11). In this book, you'll read a lot about "Battlestar Galactica," "Deadwood," "The Wire," "The West Wing," "Everwood," "The O.C.," "Sleeper Cell," "Heroes," "Lost," "Prison Break," "Saving Grace" and "Sopranos."

A Jew's View--Thank you

I was absolutely absorbed by this book. I looked forward to every time I picked it up to read. I must start by saying that I am Jewish and absolutely do NOT share the religious views of Corrie Ten Boom. But, this story is so engrossing and moving that my religious views were irrelevant. This is the remarkable story of a remarkable family that literally laid their lives out to save Jews in Holland during WWII. These are people I wish I could hug. Don't be put off by the religious views expressed. Those views caused heroic people to show mercy and empathy in the most brutal period in recent history. The views were not preachy. I only wish that I could do something good for any person that would give respect for the wonderful people in this story.

I saw Corrie ten Boom in San Diego Ca in 1976. She spoke of her times in prison , her father ,sister....The book changed my life. She and her whole family inspire me even today. The book is easy to read and tells a story that puts a seed into your soul and it grows and grows. You will read this book many times as it is food for the soul. God will bless you through Corries words of not just her survival but all the miracles that took her to freedom!

This book showed me that, yes we will have tribulation in our lives, and sometimes very overwhelming tribulation, but if we keep our eyes on God, the author and finisher of our faith, we can be victorious over-comers in ANY and ALL of our life's situations." Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God" Romans 10:17. I loved it.

Buy this and you're on your way to a better job

There isn't anything that you can't learn after reading this book.It teaches you how to memorize precedents and laws if you want to be a lawyer,how to memorize names of drugs and what they do if you want to work in pharmacy,how to memorize stock symbols if you want to be a stockbroker,memorizing insurance premiums,memorizing computer codes if you work with computers,memorizing names and faces and the person's position, phone numbers and day and hour appointments if you're a sectetary, memorizing the prices for everything easily if you work in retail and so much more. This book is priceless and it's pity it's gone out of print.Buy it while you can.

Does a good job of zeroing in on the business angle of memory

If you read Harry Lorayne's other books on memory, you can apply it to business situations.

But I appreciated this book in that it particularly focuses on business situations in general and the memorizing of number information in particular.

Hopefully, this book will come back into print. I can see on this page that it's available from other sellers, and I would strongly suggest getting ahold of it if you feel you need it. You won't be disappointed.

One thing to remember -- these techniques require a lot of persistence, patience and sometimes plain old hard work. But it will be a good example of "working hard" so that eventually you work will be less like work! (Isn't THAT a doozy of a sentence?) :)

In other words, the effort you put in will be more than worth the effort, and will save you time and work in the long run.
