A curate's egg instead of clinical wisdom
By KW de Pauw
Following an invitation to hold a series of seminars on the phenomenology of mental illness in the Department of Psychiatry of the University of Manitoba, Dr Frank Fish brought together the classic descriptions of psychiatric symptoms which, at that time, were not easily found in the English literature. The lectures were published in 1967 and 'Fish's Clinical Psychopathology' became an essential text for medical students, psychiatric residents and practising clinicians. After his death the text was revised and updated by the late Prof Max Hamilton in 1974 and 1985.

After being out of print for several years 'Fish's Clinical Psychopathology' has now been re-issued by the British Royal College of Psychiatrists in a third edition. The authors, Patricia Casey and Brendan Kelly, have updated the references and expanded the chapter on abnormal personalities added to the last edition by Hamilton. They have also included two appendices covering unusual psychiatric syndromes, defence mechanisms and cognitive distortions.

In their preface - those by Fish and Hamilton have been omitted - Casey and Kelly express the hope that despite the additions and revisions of the language, `so as to take account of changes in linguistic conventions', the text `remains true to the spirit' of Fish's original work. Alas, a comparison of this volume with the previous editions reveals it to be something of the proverbial curate's egg.

In his revision of the original text Hamilton provided a detailed but succinct overview of the historical and philosophical underpinnings of phenomenology and psychopathology in an attempt to counter the lack of philosophical training of many English-speaking psychiatrists. This material has been deleted from the new edition and, instead, the unwary reader is repeatedly invited to genuflect before the twin altars of the ICD-10 and DSM-IV. As a result, much of the clinical wisdom - and wit! - of the previous authors is lost, potentially to the detriment of good clinical practice. In view of the recent repressed memory and multiple personality debacles, particularly in North America, it is regrettable that Casey and Kelly have chosen to omit the well founded scepticism about the various dogmas of the psychodynamic schools of psychiatry. Instead, Appendix II blandly lists the `most commonly seen' defence mechanisms, ostensibly `used by the psyche to protect itself', without even hinting to the nave reader that these `techniques' cannot be observed, measured or even refuted and that despite their enduring popularity, these concepts are not facts.

Appendix I perpetuates the questionable tradition of referring to several colorful and unusual phenomena as syndromes when, in reality, most are symptoms which occur in a variety of neuropsychiatric settings. Their listing is also made redundant by earlier - and sometimes better - descriptions elsewhere in the text. The scholarship in this section is further marred by a number of unfortunate errors. The delusion of subjective doubles is not characterised by the belief that the patient has a double or Doppelgnger (a term misspelled throughout the text and omitted from the new index). The so-called Windigo delusion is mentioned as one of the culture-bound disorders, much beloved by Anglophone psychiatrists, without giving any indication that there are serious doubts that this phenomenon has ever been observed in a clinical setting. While controversy has, undoubtedly, surrounded the concept of Munchausen syndrome by proxy, it is, pace the tabloid papers, not the case that `convictions based on this diagnosis have also been overturned in the courts in Britain'.

Finally, given the widely acknowledged limitations of the categorical approach to personality disorders, it is a pity that not more space is given to the alternative dimensional conceptualisation, which has demonstrated better reliability with respect to interdiagnostic agreement, temporal stability and clinical validity.

The return of 'Fish's Clinical Psychopathology' after such a long absence is indeed welcome but, sadly, it is no longer `the firm basis for clinical work and research' that Fish endeavoured to provide.

Systematic, traditional curriculum
By Michele Hixon
Rod and Staff has a fantastic English curriculum. It builds continually upon itself in a systematic way. It is best to get in this as young as possible. My son is in college (Univ South Florida) now. When he was in sixth grade I tried to start him on R&S English. It was too advanced and we had to start a grade lower, although he was able to start on grade level with R&S Math. Even if you have to start a grade lower, you will not regret using this curriculum.

Rod and Staff Beginning Wisely 3
By Sergey Tikhonovsky
The best grammar you could find: the rules are explained well and easy to understand. It provides enough exercises to master a lesson. I love their focus on diagramming sentences. There are several oral and written assignments per lesson. Since it is a hard cover text it could be used by multiple students.

And that’s probably for the best. The last thing Jaime needs is for anyone—particularly Dante—to find out about her little “problem.” The one that haunts her past and threatens to destroy her and everyone she loves…

As the pack Beta, workaholic Dante Garcea doesn’t have time for distractions—especially the kind promised by Jaime Farrow. It’s all he can do to keep her at arm’s length and his desire at bay. Yet when her flirtations abruptly end, Dante becomes suspicious. She’s hiding something, something big, and unless he can convince her to trust him, their entire pack could be in danger. He knows hot-headed Jaime will resist him…but Dante never takes no for an answer.

About the Author
Author Suzanne Wright, a native of England, can’t remember a time when she wasn’t creating characters and telling their tales. Even as a child, she loved writing poems, plays, and stories; as an adult, Wright has published three novels, Here Be Sexist Vampires, From Rags, and Feral Sins, the first book in the Phoenix Pack series. Wright, who lives in Liverpool with her husband and two children, freely admits that she hates housecleaning and can’t cook but that she always shares chocolate.

Fanfreakingtastic - Mild spoilers
By RVAbooklover
There is no way to write a review without some spoilers, but I will stick to very minor ones.

I read Here Be Sexist Vampires by Suzanne Wright several months, a year? I don't know, ago, and really liked it. At that time, it was the only book available by this author. I shrugged, though I was disappointed. So it was a happy surprise when this title turned up in the Vine offerings for this month.

I have been reading PNR since before it was an actual category, and I have to say, I really liked this story. Is any new ground covered? No, not really. Anything unique to add to the vast PNRland out there? Um, not so much. So what makes Wicked Cravings so special and memorable? The characters. It is all about the characters.

Though this is the second book in the Phoenix Pack series, I have not read the first as yet. I was in no way lost, although it was obviously a sequel to something. Dante is the pack Beta, a dedicated workaholic who has intimacy issues. Jamie is a newcomer to the Phoenix Pack, and has some secrets she is not willing to share. What she would like to share is Dante's bed, and that is not a secret. However, when she overhears Dante make a disparaging remark about her, she has had enough of throwing herself at the dominant male. Dante is charmingly chagrinned by Jamie's decision to leave well enough alone when it comes to him.

While there are external conflicts in the plot (a former lover makes a reappearance, Jamie's secret, some yahoos and a lying skank from another pack make trouble), most of the conflict comes from Dante and Jamie trying to find a way to coexist. *****MILD SPOILER***** Due to Jamie's secret, Dante is under the impression that Jamie is a submissive wolf, and she is inclined to let him think that until an event occurs that makes it obvious to Dante that Jamie is anything but submissive.

What worked for me - Dante is a dominant to die for. Get your fan handy because Dante will cause hot flashes even during the non sexy scenes. Jamie says the guy is good with his mouth repeatedly, and she is not kidding. Dante uses his words exceedingly well. (You thought I meant something naughty, didn''t you? If so, you will LOVE this book!) He is commitment phobic, self centered and not at all versed in the ways of relationships. But he tries. So hard. And screws up pretty mightily a few times. Dante admits when he is wrong, and shows Jamie over and over how important she is to him. Oh, I just melted.

Jamie - I love me a smart mouthed heroine, and Jamie is a master. She is snarky and irreverent, with a low tolerance for rules and no flight instinct. She is a strong woman, and a good friend, and so much fun. Jamie has been halfway in love with Dante since she was a child, and time has done nothing to diminish her feelings for him. Jamie is reluctant to believe that Dante could want her for anything more than a fling, and she isn't willing to tie herself to one person, anyway. Although she wants to with Dante, she is afraid of long term repercussions. Jamie kind of reminds me of Sara in Shelly Laurenston's Mangus Pack. Without the abundance of crazy.

The Phoenix Pack - Oh, I hope, I hope, I HOPE all of the single males get their own story. Especially Dominic, because what a fun story that will be! I loved how developed and distinct each pack member was. Ms. Wright has a real talent for character development, fleshing out a personality in a matter of a few words. Beautiful.

The writing - Splendid pacing, love how the story unfolded, LOVED how Dante and Jamie found their way to each other...As referenced above, I have read the vast majority of PNR out there. Wicked Cravings reminds me a lot of Nalini Singh's packs in her Psy-Changeling series. The same closeness, the detail to pack life, the humor...the sex scenes remind me of a cross between Lora Leigh and Keri Arthur. They are explicit and plentiful, so consider yourself warned if that isn't your thing.

What didn't work for me - Not much. I just had one Wha? moment when we meet Dante's ex. Because she is just awful, and I couldn't see anyone, much less Dante, falling for her nasty self. Other than that, I was a happy reader, beginning to end.

Bottom line - I am going to purchase the first Phoenix Pack book, as well as the sequel to HBSV, and read myself into a Suzanne Wright induced stupor! Time very well spent. If you enjoy Nalini Singh or Cynthia Eden, you owe it to yourself to give this a try.

Graphic Paranormal Romance and Guilty Pleasure
By A Book a Day
I've been following Suzanne Wright ever since I read her first book Here Be Sexist Vampires (The Deep In Your Veins Series) and have read every book since with great enjoyment. The humor and graphic sexual content is very wicked and admittedly a guilty pleasure of mine, but there's also a real story built in there that can, at times, pull at the heartstrings. If you've read Feral Sins, then you know what to expect from dirty talk and alpha over the top dominant werewolves. If not, then this might hit you from left field since it's a notch more explicit than a Laurann Dohner or Lauren Dane and makes Maya Banks tame. Bottom line, it's dirty. I would recommend reading Feral Sins first since there are many characters that are introduced in more detail in the first book that may seem insignificant or distracting in the sequel. The only downside to this particular installment is that it too closely mirrors the first in personalities. Although the storyline is completely unique, our heroine's personality is exactly like Taryn from the first book right down to her interactions with the Trey's grandmother, and Dante is just like Trey when it comes to possessive sexual alpha males... it essentially took some of that magic I felt in the first book away.

After the Phoenix pack defeated their alpha's uncle during the first book, a few of their old pack members were allowed to join the Phoenix pack. One such person is Jamie Farrow who has always had a crush on the pack beta, Dante Garcea, since they were little kids. Jamie would love to get down and dirty with Dante, but she's not interested in anything permanent for fear that her secret could get out. Dante has always been drawn to Jamie, but he won't date anyone in his pack for fear that his truemate may come along and make things awkward. He knows exactly how that situation can ruin lives and he wants nothing to do with it, but when Jamie gets his message loud and clear and moves on from him, he and his wolf begin to panic and we find the pursuer becoming the pursued.

I personally found this storyline to present a greater obstacle to being together than the first making the challenges very real as opposed to miscommunications or stubborn behavior. It even had me tearing up a bit over their plight. It was a little slow to start, but found its rhythm and set the stage nicely for the next story which I'm hoping will be Shaya's story. Dare I say there was almost too much sex that came off as repetitive and made it longer than necessary. There is back door action and Dante is pretty obsessed with it, so if that's not for you, be forwarned. There is not a group scene for others who didn't care for it in the first... Dante definitely does not share. Otherwise, it's a nice continuation from a refreshing new voice in paranoral erotic romance with plenty of material to continue a great series.

Wicked Cravings
By K. Hill
I should preface my review by saying that I have not read book one in this series. If you have, what I found to be a con about this book may not apply to you.

PLOT: Jaime has had a crush on Dante since she was a kid. After overhearing a conversation where he says she's not his type, she gives up on him. What she doesn't know is that he's wanted her all along but he's been avoiding relationships because of his commitment to his job.

PROS: I like the concentration that the author gave to Jaime and Dante's developing relationship. This isn't one of those stories where they argue the whole thing through only to be happy ever after at the end.

There are plenty of interesting characters that I wouldn't mind reading more about.

CONS: 1. I never liked Jaime. It's more like I tolerated her. A sassy character is like salt in a dish. A dash is great; add too much and the result is inedible. I think she was supposed to come off as funny and dominant. What she comes across as is childish, reckless, and irresponsible. From her constant use of "whatfreakingever," which makes her sound like a teen from whenever that used to be overused, to her choice to go out to a club when she knows she can't control her wolf, she makes poor and immature decisions.

2. There isn't enough plotting here to support 400 pages. While I liked that Jaime and Dante's relationship is the main focus of this book, after a while, it seems like they are thrown into one redundant situation after another. It's proven over and over that they are possessive of one another. Dante is dominant and controlling, but Jaime will not allow him to control her. Jaime is having difficulty controlling her wolf and could be a danger. 400+ pages of this.

3. Maybe this is answered in book one, but what happened to her parents? Why were they attacked? What happened to the attackers? Even if this is answered in book one, it should be reiterated in this book since it's the cause of Jaime's trauma. I kept expecting this to be better explained, but it never was.

4. Jaime calls Dante Popeye with no explanation whatsoever. Does he eat spinach, smoke a pipe, have weirdly shaped arms or have a face like a catcher's mitt? It's an ugly and irritating nickname.

5. Jaime and Dante are the bickering type of couple that I'd actively avoid in real life.

2.5 - 3 STARS: Largely, the author and I do not share the same sense of humor. I thought Dominic's pick-up lines were funny, but that's about it. Since humor is subjective, I didn't list it as a con. Obviously, many people enjoyed this book.

Learning Discrete Mathematics with ISETL, by Nancy Baxter, Edward Dubinsky, Gary Levin

The title of this book, Learning Discrete Mathematics with ISETL raises two issues. We have chosen the word "Learning" rather than "Teaching" because we think that what the student does in order to learn is much more important than what the professor does in order to teach. Academia is filled with outstanding mathematics teachers: excellent expositors, good organizers, hard workers, men and women who have a deep understanding of Mathematics and its applications. Yet, when it comes to ideas in Mathe matics, our students do not seem to be learning. It may be that something more is needed and we have tried to construct a book that might provide a different kind of help to the student in acquiring some of the fundamental concepts of Mathematics. In a number of ways we have made choices that seem to us to be the best for learning, even if they don't always completely agree with standard teaching practice. A second issue concerns students' writing programs. ISETL is a pro gramming language and by the phrase "with ISETL" in the title, we mean that our intention is for students to write code, think about what they have written, predict its results, and run their programs to check their predic tions. There is a trade-off here. On the one hand, it can be argued that students' active involvement with constructing Mathematics for themselves and solving problems is essential to understanding concepts.

A good text for discrete mathematics !
By James R. LeVeque
This is a very good text book for use in a discrete mathematics class. It is also good for someone who would like to learn a lot of good math by learing the ISETL interactive computer language on their own. But the casual reader should beware, this book will take a lot of hard work. ISETL (Interactive Set Language) can now be downloaded from the net free of charge. It is a language specially developed to teach mathematics. Discrete math is of special interest to computer programers.

African Christology: Jesus in Post-Missionary African Christianity, by Clifton R. Clarke

The degree to which Christianity has been embraced by Africa south of the Sahara has been a phenomenon that has led to a closer examination of the mutual impact of the Christian faith and African culture. A very important question in this continuing debate is how African Christians can embrace a faith, which came to them via Europe and North America, in a way that is true to the Bible and at the same time be the religion of African people. For many, the African Indigenous churches epitomize this tension between faith and culture. At the center of this debate lies Jesus Christ. How are Africans in post-missionary Africa to speak of Christ in a way that is truly meaningful to the African and through the worldview that is their own?

Clarke questions the theological axis on which Christology in Africa has revolved and upon which Christological discourse has been developed. He advocates a re-examination of the language and symbolism, or orality, as a means of articulating who Jesus is for Africans in ways that are suitable to their context and worldview.

Drawing upon a large-scale questionnaire survey, other qualitative research methods, and theologians and researchers of African religions and culture, Clarke represents a grassroots perspective of the way Christ is experienced in Akan African Indigenous Churches in Ghana.

"Chafing for too long under the yoke of a Western Christianity that was irrelevant to their context, African Spirit churches have emerged with a vigorous, inculturated faith pitched at the wavelength of African need. The biblical Christ they joyfully worship resembles, thinks like, and speaks like an African. African Christology adds this significant voice to the Christological conversation, expanding and enriching it with unique, illuminating insights and perspectives. A needed contribution to theological scholarship and global Christianity!"
--Trevor Grizzle
Professor of New Testament
Oral Roberts University

"Clarke's African Christology is a must read, not only for those interested in African theology nor only for scholars, historians, and missiologists of African Christianity, but for all interested in and called to the Christian theological enterprise in a post-western, post-Enlightenment, and post-Christendom world. Systematicians, dogmaticians, and academic theologians across the discipline who take up this book will be challenged to rethink their methodological paradigms for Christian theological discourse in the twenty-first century.
--Amos Yong
J. Rodman Williams Professor of Theology
Regent University

"Much has been written on the mission history of the African Independent Churches, arguably the most significant development in African Christianity within the last century. Clifton's useful study takes us into their understanding of Jesus Christ. The extensive use it makes of their oral theological discourses on Jesus Christ enables us to appreciate the Christological significance of Christian religious innovation in Africa."
--J. Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu
Professor of African Christianity and Pentecostal Theology
Trinity Theological Seminary, Ghana

Clifton Clarke is Associate Professor of Global Missions and World Christianity at Regent University and is an ordained bishop in the Church of God (Cleveland, TN).
