About the Author

Graeme Forbes is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He is the author of Attitude Problems (Oxford, 2006), Languages of Possibility (1989), and The Metaphysics of Modality (Oxford, 1985). He has held research fellowships at New College, Oxford, and Edinburgh University, and has taught at the University of California at Santa Barbara and at Riverside.

Writing is a little convoluted. I really hate that he references multiple complex formulas sometimes 10 pages back to define something even more complex without creating any further examples.

About the Author
Karen K. Kirst-Ashman is Professor Emerita and former chairperson in the Social Work Department at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where she taught for 28 years. She has written six social work textbooks in multiple editions and numerous publications, articles, and reviews on social work and women's issues. She also has served on the Editorial Board of AFFILIA: Journal of Women and Social Work, and as a consulting editor for many social work journals including the Journal of Social Work Education. Dr. Kirst-Ashman has been a member on the Board of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and has served as a CSWE accreditation site visitor on various occasions. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Wisconsin. She has been the recipient of both the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Roseman Award for Excellence in Teaching and the University Outstanding Teaching Award. She earned her BSW degree and MSSW degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her Ph.D. in social work at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has worked as a practitioner and administrator in child welfare and mental health agencies.

Grafton Hull is a full professor at the University of Utah College of Social Work. He founded and directed the College's BSW Program. He has 38 years of experience teaching at BSW, MSW, and Ph.D. levels. His practice experience includes work in human service agencies providing mental health, child welfare, and juvenile justice programs. He holds a BS in sociology, an MSW, and a doctorate in education (counseling, guidance, and personnel services). Hull is the co-author of seven texts and numerous articles in social work journals. He has served on the CSWE Board of Directors, Commission on Accreditation, and Nominations Committee; and as a President of the Association of Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors (BPD), from which he received the Significant Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. His biography is listed in WHO'S WHO IN AMERICA.

Outstanding Amount of Information BUT Extremely Repetitive

I am in a BSW Program in Colorado using this textbook for Generalist Practice I. When assigned readings from my professor, it is like pulling teeth sometimes to get through certain chapters; usually when the explanation of a new framework is proposed. The framework, concept, or theory can be thoroughly explained in 1-4 pages, but is commonly dragged out for 9-15 pages, just worded in different ways, all with the same root meanings and definitions.

Definitely useful to have though as a prospective practitioner or therapist!

This book is extremely helpful to me! I am currently a senior in a social work program and this book does wonders for my mind. It's clear and easy to under. Although I do believe that the book does include the a lot of the author opinions. This is still a great book for anyone who is going into a social field dealing with people!

Fun, little puzzle book

This is a fun, little book of puzzles of varying degrees of difficulty. The trick to most of them is to not assume anything; think outside the box. You don't need special math ability or loads of knowledge about science. If you really take the time to think and experiment, you should be able to solve most of these puzzles, and the ones you don't will make you slap your head and say, "why didn't I think of that?"
I read it on my Kindle Touch and on my Ipad, and had no Kindle issues with either.

An interesting little book of puzzles

An interesting little book of puzzles. A good mix of easy and hard. There were some I had to scratch my head over for a while and only a few of those did I read the answer and think "well that's a bit of a stretch". Not the best book of puzzles I've seen but there were very few that I'd heard before and there were some gems I'll use again.

About the Author
Romila Thapar is Emeritus Professor in History at the Jawaharlal Nehru University. She has served as visiting professor at Cornell University and the University of Pennsylvania and is currently the Kluge Chair in Countries and Cultures of the South at the Library of Congress. Among her previous books are Ashoka and the Decline of the Mauryas, Indian Tales, and The Penguin History of Early India: From the Origins to AD 1300.

Great History of an even that was almost lost

Thapar writes, "This book is an attempt to explore the interpretation of one event that has been projected in the last two centuries as central to the relations between two communites in South Asia, the Hindu and the Muslim..." It is a narrow topic that Thapar targets, but in that it is a moment in history that has almost been lost, I'm glad she has given it her full attention and her erudite pen. The event in question is the rading of Somanatha Hindu temple by the Sultan of Ghazni in the 11th century. The subsequent accounts of this event lasted all the way to the British colonial rule of India 8 centuries later. The Somanatha raid is a critical topic for post-colonial discourse, as is the book for anyone interested in this field.

Best Researched Book on an important event

Society owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to Romila Thapar for this extraordinary book. It is difficult for words to fully describe the immense value this book has added to the field of history. Thapar points out that it was the British, who first used the embellished accounts of the Turko-Persian writers to make Sultan Mahmud's 1026 raid on the Somanatha temple into an issue, in order to further their divide-and-rule-policy in the sub-continent. Today, the right wing extremists use these accounts to further their own agenda.

Thapar's scholarly research details the numerous contradictions and exaggerations in the Turko-Persian writers' narratives on the subject of the Sultan's raid. She points out that the Turko-Persian narratives differ with each other even on the central aspect of the destroyed icon. Was the destroyed icon the Arabian idol Lat, or was it the Arabian Manat, or was it the Indian Shiv Ling? Was it hollow, or was it solid? Was it made of stone, or was it made of metal? Was it anthromorphic, or was it anicon? Which one was it?

Thapar then walks the reader through the more reliable Sanskrit sources and local beliefs, which contradict the Turko-Persian narratives. Follow Thapar's enchanting journey, searching for the truth - through temple inscriptions, Jaina temple documentation, real estate deeds, government excavation findings of the temple - giving temple's size, construction material, dating of construction, and more. This is without a doubt one of the most fascinating, and captivating book you will ever read - an absolutely mesmerizing must-read for everyone.

He reflecting us

Primo Levi, Italian Jew, survivor of Auschwitz, author of "The Periodic Table" (21 stories each connected by a chemical element to tale), died at the age of 68. The official record has it that his fall from his three-storied apartment was a suicide. Some of his friends believed he killed himself others were convinced that he had already died 40 years before in Auschwitz. His life and death are relevant to those who enjoy his written work because they were pieces that aligned with the stories he wrote and the thoughts that he mused in his essays. Primo Levi was a writer whose thoughts drill into the deepest depths of intellectual darkness to, as he described his own approach in "Translating Kafka" (one of the essays in The Mirror Maker) to light. Yet somehow, reading his stories and essays, we might find it difficult to separate the emotions that drove him this way and that from the clarity of his analysis of life. His was a difficult mind to access and comprehend, but he was a writer of clarity and brilliance. It is this kind of admixture that makes writers like Primo Levi so fascinating. The stories and essays in "The Mirror Maker" were all very short, very clear and scarily thought provoking. My favourite essays from this collection were "Translating Kafka" and "Bacteria Roulette", and of the stories, "They were made to be Together" and "Through the Walls". The reader will find his work a mirror reflecting aspects of Primo Levi's life as well as his own; and we should understand that the paths life has for each of us are more myriad than the Cretan Labyrinths of the Minotaur. We must not only feel our way out but also think our way out. After all, as the author wrote (in "The Moon and the Man") that man is strong because "of the many weapons nature offered the animals, he opted for the brain".

hilariously insightful; primo levi doesn't usually strike across as a fantasy writer, nonetheless, his un-apologetic personality comes through these intricate stories, written to reflect various avenue in the nature of human beings.

At the moment I don't recall these stories. I just read everything by or about Primo Levi because I believe he is one of the most moral and ethical men I have ever heard of. He led both an
ordinary life as an industrial chemist and an extrodinary life as a victim of the Nazi death camps,
and still managed to maintain a balanced view of humanity. He lived an exempilary life and died tragically. He is an inspiration.
