Gr 9 Up-Cassie travels with just the essentials. First on the list: Luger, M-16, ammo, Bowie knife. Incidentals like food, water, sleeping bag, and nail clippers come further down. A nondescript 16-year-old, she is one of the very few people left alive on Earth. Aliens sent waves of destructive forces to eradicate humans: Cassie's family survived the 1st and 2nd Waves. Her mother died in the 3rd Wave (Pestilence) and her father in the 4th (Silencers). Her little brother may still be alive; he may even be safe in a military compound, as Cassie deals with the 5th Wave- a carefully orchestrated survival dance of kill or be killed. The aliens are never described in detail, and their reasons for wanting the humans gone are not clear. But they are ruthless and determined, and their methods for gaining control mean readers will never again see owls as the friendly, mail-delivering avians portrayed in the world of Harry Potter. The compelling story is told from the viewpoints of Cassie and Ben, who is now a soldier known as Zombie. Cassie crushed on Ben at school, but he never particularly noticed her. Now he has transformed from handsome high school sports star to focused paramilitary killer. Yancey's story is full of violent twists and turns, but character development continues along with nonstop action. Cassie and Ben grow out of high school self-centeredness and find leadership qualities. Cassie's interactions with an alien elevate him from a one-dimensional "bad guy" role. While the big body counts (billions die) happen largely offscreen, there are numerous more personal instances in which teens are both killers and killed. Cassie vs. Katniss

I liked the story line, as depressing as it was, not starting with the very beginning of the alien attack, but having little bits of the waves described as the story progressed, was genius. I read a review that stated if this book(s) came out before the Hunger Games, then Cassie would have been Katniss...I agree. Cassie as a person in this novel, is much more dynamic...and funny. At first I didn't care for the author, Yancy, having multiple persons in the story telling from their respective viewpoints, but it grew on me...except the one chapter told in first person from the 5 year brother of Cassie - silly. The interaction and relationship that develops between Cassie and Evan was a dynamic that was completely lost in translation when the movie was made...with that said if you have watched the movie, but not read the book, I would highly recommend the book - very entertaining, but more importantly, the ultimate struggle of hope, when all seems lost.

Do they look like us or can they make themselves look like us

What do you do when the Others come? You can't trust your senses, you can't trust anyone. Your only goal is to survive and maybe keep some of your humanity intact. When you can't trust anything or anyone - do you shoot first or take the chance when that hesitation will probably mean your life?
When the first wave comes, all technology is gone in a moment. An EMP takes everything out. The second wave caused massive tsunamis and destroyed the coasts of the world. The third wave infected and killed 97% of the remaining population in brutal fashion. The fourth wave destroyed all trust in humanity and introduced the constant threat of drones. The wave that makes you question every action... and the fifth wave... is us.
Cassie must survive in this strange world with no mother, father or brother to care for anymore - fighting and living because if she is the last human on Earth she refuses to go out with a whimper. She will fight until she can fight no longer. But she is not the only body left, even if she may be the only one with her own mind left. It is possible that one in every three people left is an Other. A Silencer. An Imposter. Has your mind and body been hacked? Do they look like us or can they make themselves look like us? Or maybe they've been here all along. Waiting. That's when you can't trust your eyes. You may be looking at an Other and not even realize it.
We next meet Ben, who must rediscover his fighting spirit if he wants to survive and survive he must. After not succumbing to the virus that infected him, he cannot give up. Taught to fight and given a new name, he must battle for his place.
Part III shows us a new perspective, an Other awakened in a human body and given a mission. To kill. To finish the human race, one by one. He has been tracking Cassie for a while and takes aim. Shoots. Traps her, but for some reason cannot bring himself to finish her.
Hunted. Shot. Then saved? Cassie wakes up being tended to by Evan on the family farm. He is the only one left of his family. Evan helps to nurse her back to health, bakes bread, carves walking sticks and wants to help her rescue her brother Sammy. What can't this farm boy do? And why does this make us so suspicious? Even Cassie can't quite bring herself to trust him. There are just little things that seem off, like a life-long farm boy with smooth hands and perfect cuticles. No callouses to be found. There's a small nagging feeling in her mind that asks- what if he's an Other?
The characters are well written and believable. You feel for them. Root for their successes and hurt when they fail. You wish for their survival despite the current chaos and destruction of the world. The world is familiar and yet fundamentally altered by the Others.
The book draws you in from the start and you puzzle over people and motives. Who will survive and if the human race survives this destruction, how will this ordeal fundamentally change the survivors? I am constantly questioning my conclusions and re-evaluating what I believe i happening. A great book is able to reveal just enough that the entire plot is not given away by page ten. This post-apocalyptic, alien-invasion novel is highly recommenede, especially if you plan to watch the movie. I cannot wait to read the next book, Infinite Sea!

Nice twist on alien invasion

I'll start with a disclaimer: I LOVE alien stories. The ones where the aliens are nice are my favorite thought so I went into this one not knowing if I'd like it or not.
Earth is under attack from aliens. It's so intense death seems to be the only outcome for Earthlings. However, this is not horror, nor is it post-apocalyptic either since it's happening as we read. It's science fiction at its best.
The story is told in three different POVs, two of them being first person. I admit I got lost the first time it switched. I wondered how Cassie suddenly got sick with the disease from the third wave; however, after this little hic-up, I paid more attention to the section changes and didn't have any more problems.
The idea behind the story is plausible, enough you might catch yourself looking at the sky from time to time, and you won't see the next electricity failure the same way ever again.
All four main characters showed courage, strength, and they all faced their own dilemmas, yet my favorite was Evan. Although I loved the story and the way the author put us into the protagonist's heads, I'd say Evan is the reason I give this book a 5* (in lieu of a 4*). HE IS the difference between 'Yep, I love the story!' and 'Oh, I want to read more!'
I'll definitely pick up 'The Infinite Sea, The Fifth Wave #2'.
