Letters Never Sent, by Sandra Moran

Three women, united by love and kinship, struggle to conform to the social norms of the times in which they live.

In 1931 Katherine Henderson leaves behind her small town in Kansas and the marriage proposal of a local boy to live on her own and work at the Sears & Roebuck glove counter in Chicago. There she meets Annie - a bold, outspoken feminist who challenges Katherine's idea of who she thinks she is and what she thinks she wants in life.

In 1997 Katherine's daughter, Joan, travels to Lawrence, Kansas, to clean out her estranged mother's house. Hidden away in an old suitcase, she finds a wooden box containing trinkets and a packet of sealed letters to a person identified only by a first initial.

Joan reads the unsent letters and discovers a woman completely different from the aloof and unyielding mother of her youth - a woman who had loved deeply and lost that love to circumstances beyond her control. Now she just has to find the strength to use the healing power of empathy and forgiveness to live the life she's always wanted to live.

Striking Debut Novel
By Amazon Customer
My husband is friends with the author, whom I haven't met, but that is how I wound up reading this gem. I'm glad, because it's new enough that I might not have found it otherwise. It's a welcome relief when you read something as an amateur critic, knowing that the author has asked for your honest feedback, and realize during the read that you can say in good conscience that you genuinely liked it.

I found "Letters Never Sent" to be a leisurely read, but an emotionally provactive story. I especially liked the writing style, which in several places left me holding my breath, or fighting tears. The plot is well designed in that it isn't spoon fed to the reader, but there are still enough tidbits to hint at what might happen. It pulled me along, and I didn't have any points where I needed to nudge myself to keep reading it. Rather, I found myself thinking of the book and its characters throughout the day and even after finishing the book. As an aside, I also thought the lovemaking scenes were very tastefully written.

The narrative follows Joan, a woman in her forties, who has just returned to her hometown of Lawrence, Kansas to attend to her recently passed mother's possessions and prepare them and the home for sale. On her first night back, Joan finds several letters dating from 1947 through 1959, which her mother Katherine had hidden away--written, but never mailed. Curious, she reads them and learns to her considerable shock that for years her mother was apparently involved in a secret love affair. In the days that follow, Joan begins to ask questions she had never before considered. The answers give her new perspective on the strange fabric of her family, on the mother she'd always before viewed as a hard and distant woman, and on her own life.

Joan's chapters are interspersed with Katherine's, which reveal a woman much different from the mother Joan thought she knew. These follow Katherine's journey from Kansas farm girl to Chicago shop girl and her love affair from its beginnings to its dramatic conclusion years later. Katherine's story is a emotionally arresting one of tender new love made halting and uncertain by her difficulty in balancing her need for social acceptability with the emerging realization and acceptance that the great love of her life is another woman.

Both narratives end with the conclusion of an important emotional journey for the characters. They are satisfying, if a bit sad. Everything that needs to happen happens.

I tried to think of some already mainstream books that I enjoyed and thought have a similar feel, but realized I don't apparently read that much period-tasteful-love-story-literary-fiction! That said, I think if you enjoyed "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society", you'd probably like "Letters" too. It's been a while since I read the former, but I think "Letters" is equally well-written and has a similar theme and general feel. At any rate, I recommend this story without reservation and urge anyone who enjoys the genre to take a chance on this talented new author.

Beautiful Story, Beautiful Writing
By Cindy T. Rizzo
This is the kind of book that helps us keep faith that the quality of lesbian fiction is getting better and better. Sandra Moran does a beautiful job bringing to life both contemporary characters and those coming of age in the 1930s as she takes us through an incredible story of a love affair that spanned decades and faced great odds. It is difficult now to remember how many barriers there were in the years before WW II to the ability of two women to make a life together, including their own internalized homophobia. The ways in which the contemporary character's life is influenced by her discovery of the secrets kept by her deceased mother is also well told. While I had some sense of what would come to be in this plot I was unprepared for the final surprising twist. This is a book that moved to the top of my recommended lesfic list. An impressive debut novel by Sandra Moran.

Tragic But Engrossing
By Hans Visser
I enjoyed reading the book, and felt like the characters were well fleshed-out and consistent. Sadly, it wasn't exactly a fun read, as the struggles the main character goes through are such that you can feel that even if there is a happy ending coming, it will be so compromised that it becomes less a story or triumph than simple survival by a person sadly trapped by their harrowing small-town upbringing. And as nice as it is that there's no cop-out ending, that becomes more admirable than fun.
