Sophistication & Simplicity: The Life and Times of the Apple II Computer, by Steven Weyhrich

Despite humble beginnings, today Apple, Inc. enjoys unprecedented popularity and prosperity with its products, routinely selling over a million devices in a single day. It is a major innovator in the computing and consumer landscape, and as shown in this retrospective, the history of the Apple II computer plays a large part in the current successes of the company. The late 1970s saw the dawn of the Apple II, the company's first hit product. It provided the breathing room for Apple to become self-sustaining and ultimately blossom into one of the greatest business and technology successes in history. This account provides a unique view of early personal computing and Apple as a company, focusing almost exclusively on the role of the Apple II within that story. It extends outward to the products, publications, and early online services that made up the ecosystem for the platform during its active years, and follows the story to present-day enthusiasts who still find new things to do with a computer that got its start more than 35 years ago.

Must Have for any Apple II user or any one interested in computer golden age history
By ZARDINI Olivier
The book is pretty solid and you will find there everything you need to know about the Apple II history. Pictures are numerous and always in very good quality.

A little regret is about the miss of the Apple II games chapter. There is nothing (not even a screen shot) about the Apple II used as a video game machine, which is sad because most of the home computer game industry have started with this computer (Wizardy, Ultima, Phantasy Star, Might and Magic,Lode Runner , Choplifter, Karateka, Aztec, Conan, Bruce Lee, Olympic Decathlon, Summer Games, Winter Games, Carmen San Diego, Prince of Persia, Bard's Tale, SSI Wargames, Sierra Adventure Games, Oregon Trail and the other educational games...).

The ultimate in sophistication.
By Chad W. Armstrong
Sophistication & Simplicity nearly flew under my radar, but I am glad to have come across this new title about Apple technologies. While most Apple-related books focus on the history of Apple, the Macintosh, or one of its founders, this book chronicles the life of the Apple II line of computers and those who took part of this history.

Packed with over 500 pages worth of details from the hardware, software, peripherals, conferences, and publications, this is one of the most comprehensive computer books I've read. The dedication to this level of detail and research shows that this book is truly a labor of love.

This book gives a good look at the early years of microcomputers -- the Apple II did not (initially) fare nearly as well as its early competitors, the Commodore PET and TRS-80, but it managed to graduate from a hobbyist's tool to a successful commercial product and remain in production until 1993.

Also provided is an interesting perspective of the dual computer lines which were running at Apple throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. If there had been no Mac, the Apple II line might have been representative of the gradual progression of computers.

There is an insane amount of details provided, but if one does further research about the Apple II, the magazines, or conferences (such as Kansasfest), one will find a lot of the important names come up over and over.

As superb and comprehensive as this book is, I do have a couple of items to nitpick.

As another reviewer mentioned, there is very little mentioned about computer games. Considering that one of the reasons to invest in a home computer was to play games, I feel that this would have been an excellent topic to have elaborated upon further. The game Mystery House, which was the first game from the company that would become Sierra On-Line, is mentioned only in passing. If one wants more details about the early days of the video games on microcomputers, one should read the last third of Steven Levy's book "Hackers: Heroes of the Revolution".

If there is an update to this book, I recommend that it is proofread better the next time around. Reading through this book felt like playing "Find the Typo" when I read an issue of MacTech magazine. There are numerous cases where a word is spelled correctly, but it is just the wrong word ('the' instead of 'that'). There is once case where the Indiana town of Terre Haute is spelled correctly on one page, but then misspelled 'Terra Haute' on the adjoining page. I also came across two instances where the date in a caption to a magazine cover was not correct (one can see the cover clearly enough that the dates were mismatched).

This is a very comprehensive book, but in some ways, too heavy in some details and too light in others. One case where it is too heavy in one subject is that there are at least six chapters (Chapters 7, 16, 19, 36, 40, and 42) dedicated to various publications centered around the Apple II. After awhile, this started to become frustrating -- "Another chapter about magazines?!"

There is an underlining tone of resentment throughout the book that Apple "abandoned" the Apple II in favor of the Mac. Granted, this is a book centered around the Apple II, so it is understandable that the author and dedicated supporters of the Apple II would hold some level of disdain for any computer besides their favored computing platform. Through the rainbow-hued lenses of the Apple II fan, not supporting the Apple II practically bordered on digital treason. That there were still companies and services supporting the Apple II up until the end the 1990s is encouraging and fascinating to see that a computing line born in the 1970s and refined throughout the 1980s still had a foothold in the same arena shared by Windows and the Mac.

The Apple II had had its day, and what a glorious day (or decade) it had been. Computers are a quicksilver technology. Today's flagship gadget will become tomorrow's paperweight. The Apple II helped to dismantle the oligarchy of mainframe computing by distributing the power and wealth of computers to the individual user.

For those who lived through this era, this book should entice a warm sense of nostalgia. For others, this book provides an interesting snapshot of the early rise of microcomputers. The Apple II may not be capable of typical day-to-day work in the 21st century, but the spirit lives on in the creative endeavors of today's and tomorrow's inventors who will lead the next revolution.

The Apple II is dead. Long live the Apple II.

A welcome addition to my Apple books library
By MarkM007
As an Apple IIe owner, I waited anxiously for this book to be published. When it arrived I was not dissapointed. The author did a wonderful job of gathering just about every fact and detail imaginable about the Apple IIe and its place in the Apple family of computers and software. In fact, I intend to use it as a reference guide as I search out software to run on my IIe and IIc and peripherals to attach to them. This is a must read for Apple fans, especially if you are interested in the Apple II series. The book is well written, of superb quality and well documented. It contains many interesting photographs of computers, advertisements, software screen shots, peripherals and much more. it is over 500 pages of great information that is almost impossible to find in any one place. It is well worth its price.
