Read this book!

What an amazing book. It's hard for people in this day and age to understand how real and important communists were in the early to mid 20th century and how central they were to the formation of labor unions, the struggles against racism and fascism, the fights for things taken for granted today such as Social Security and unemployment insurance, and so much more. Harry Fisher is one of my heroes. I dare you to read the last chapters with a dry eye.

We need more Harry Fishers

Harry Fisher lived in an often unjust world, and challenged illegitimate authority on many fronts-- from the orphanage he grew up in, to fascist Spain, from the workplace, to the wartime US army, and to the governments of the United States and the Soviet Union. Yet he never became jaundiced; he maintained a dignified, gentle appreciation for humanity, and a hope that people would carry on the struggle for social justice and peace. He closes his narrative counseling his readers to "stand up for what's right and your life will have meaning....Be part of humanity."
His editors -- his daughter and son -- have collected a lifetime's worth of Harry's writings, and have produced an engaging and cohesive account of one person who, by the choices he made, made a difference.
